Southern sensation Asin talks about her debut in Hindi Cinema and working with two Khans - Aamir & Salman
Why is it so! I dont know. I was not aware that they are having sleepless nights. There is nothing of that sort, there is just one film and its not even released. Lets see how audience reacts to the film. I hope everyone likes the film. Lets see.
I guess the reason could be that your debut Hindi film is with none other than Aamir Khan.
Thats true or rather its a dream come true. It was an absolute pleasure and I had never ever dreamt that this will happen but its great and I am working with two major Khans of the film industry. Its a fabulous start to my career so I feel very blessed and fortunate at the same time. Its my baby step in a different film industry and to starring opposite Aamir Khan is very exciting.
Dont you feel that its a kind of achievement, which has come pretty early to you in your career?
Definitely. Its not that everyone gets such an opportunity if not early, ever in his or her life. And yes I am feeling truly blessed.
How was the whole experience of working with Aamir Khan for Ghajini?
Oh, it was fabulous and he has been very supportive throughout the shooting of the film. Aamir is very helpful and he is a very simple person, he makes it easy to work with someone like him. He has no starry airs as other people might imagine because of the level of popularity he has or the mass appeal he has among the masses. It was a real pleasure working with him.
Did Aamir give you any tip as to how to cope up with Bollywood?
He did not give any tip whatsoever. There were just no lectures from him. He just let me be free and concentrate on my work. There were none at all.
From the still images we can sense that he is looking out for some Kalpana, who is she?
Yes, the name of my character in the film is called Kalpana and why is he mad about me - for this you have to watch the film to find out as to why is he mad. I am not going to reveal all the details right now. The countdown to the release of the film has begun and its another few more days to go.
Asin, tell us something more about the character?
Off course, as I had told you earlier, the name of my character in the film is Kalpana besides that she is a very simple girl, a very ordinary girl. I dont want to use the clichéd term - the girl next door - but she is like someone you will come across in your daily life. She is from a lower middle class background and is basically a struggler in the ad film industry in Mumbai.
Is it the same character that you played in the Tamil version of Ghajini?
Yes, its the same character and Kalpana remains untouched. There is not much change in the character in the Hindi Ghajini vis-à-vis the Tamil version.
Now all those people from South who come to Bollywood are well trained in dancing and singing, how about you?
I dont know but I am trained in dance which off course is not the filmi dance types. I am a Bharatnatyam dancer and I am also trained in folk dance but I acquired these skills not keeping in mind that someday I will be part of the film industry. Its just that when I was a kid, I was trained in dance.
Ok, who do you thing would be able to give you a stiff competition in Bollywood?
Well in the nicest way I dont see anybody as competition. Well as of now I am entirely focused on my career and I am trying to be better with each film I am doing. I am trying to grow up and improve upon my job so in that sense strictly the competition is with myself. Comparisons arise only with myself. In that way, I dont see any competition.
Ok, while shooting for Ghajini how was the atmosphere on the set: was it serious, judging by Aamirs nature?
I think the whole built up about Aamir Khan of being strict on the sets and difficult to work with is utter rubbish. He is as easy as anybody else you come across in your daily life. He is a very simple person and I keep repeating this again but I will say this that he is very down to earth and thats one of the high points of his personality. He has no airs about anything. Everyone was very comfortable working with him on the sets.
Off late Aamir has been saying very good things about you and has mentioned this that he is very impressed with your performance in Ghajini, whats your reaction?
I dont know. Its great to get compliments from Aamir Khan and that means a lot to me.
Your first film is with Aamir Khan, your second film which will release next year London Dreams is with Salman Khan, ever thought of working with SRK(Shah Rukh Khan) for your third film?
Why not? Hopefully if something exciting comes along, I would love to work with SRK.
Now when you have finally entered the film industry, any actor you would like to work with in future?
Oh there is this whole list of actors I would like to work with. Ghajini is my first Hindi film and its not even released. The whole Bollywood list is there with me but its not only stars but also technicians and directors I would like to work with. I am looking forward to work with them in future.
Did you have to go through struggle of any kind?
Touch wood. So far its been a smooth ride. After the Tamil version of Ghajini got release, I got a call from the production company and they informed me that they are remaking the film in Hindi and I was asked to do the same role. So if you may feel like, it was a smooth transition. After that I signed London Dreams and thats another exciting project. I am very lucky that way.
A very pertinent question - who is Ghajini?
Well, thats the highlight of the film. I cant reveal that.
How was the whole experience of working with Salman Khan for London Dreams?
Right now only one schedule of the film has got over which happened in Paris and London and it was a fabulously exciting schedule because the whole team was very nice. London Dreams is a musical band that is based in London, Britain and it comprises of Salman Khan, Ajay Devgan and myself apart from two more people. The whole team of the film is very exciting and off course with Vipul Shah heading the project, everything was great fun. As far as working with Salman is concerned, it was just fantastic.
Between Salman Khan and Aamir Khan, whom do you consider as a more professional and a better actor?
Well both of them are professional actors and I am not being diplomatic here. They both are huge stars and if they were not professional actors then I dont think so they would have not reached the so far in their career. Both of them have an amazing fan following and they have their own style. And just to cite an example work wise Aamir Khan approaches his character much differently than Salman Khan would approach his character. They both are simple people, frank and speak straight from their heart.
Lastly guess Salman Khan proposed to you in front of the Eiffel Tower?
Yes he had proposed to me but that was only for a film and it was a reel life incident and not a real life incident. Its part of a scene in London Dreams. It was Vipul Shahs idea that the scene should be canned in front of the Eiffel Tower. We are just puppets in the hands of the director.
Thanks a ton.
