Farhan Akhtar on Luck By Chance

Q. HI, Farhan. How much of what happened in your life is by 'luck by chance'? A. First and the foremost thing that you consider as a good fortune as to whose children you are. I think that's the first thing because if you have loving and caring parents, who are there for you then they respect your independence and your take on life. And I think these are the things kids ask for most. And that's been the luckiest thing for me, after that it's been friendship for me. I mean for most of it, it's been really good for me so I consider myself as a lucky and fortunate person at that level.

On the eve of his new release, Farhan Akhtar chats up with Rajan Singh

HI, Farhan, How much of what happened in your life is by luck by chance?

First and the foremost thing that you consider as a good fortune as to whose children you are. I think thats the first thing because if you have loving and caring parents, who are there for you then they respect your independence and your take on life. And I think these are the things kids ask for most. And thats been the luckiest thing for me, after that its been friendship for me. I mean for most of it, its been really good for me so I consider myself as a lucky and fortunate person at that level.

Farhan, how do you judge your performance in the film?

I dont know what I am supposed to say on my own performance. It is very difficult to gauge but I am happy that everyone associated with the film is happy and thats important for me.

The plot of the film revolves around a struggler trying a foothold in the film industry, you yourself must have met many such people, and how do you describe them?

A lot of strugglers life goes out in waiting for things to happen. You are constantly waiting for people to meet you for an opportunity. You are waiting to be tested and they are waiting for that one scene to be given so that they are able to outperform everyone around. So all in all there is lots of waiting element in their life. They are all waiting by themselves and hoping for something to happen. These all are very much a part of strugglers existence.

Farhan, how closely have you seen the struggling phase of your life?

Everyone has their own time of struggle and they could be of different kind of struggle, I dont think everyone can struggle the same way. I had never aspired to become an actor or wanted someone to cast me in his or her films and do roles. It was something which happened gradually, people saw my work as a director and felt that ok lets try him if he can act or not. I have not been through this struggle but in terms of making a film I had to go through a little period of frustration. The phase was not as long as Zoyas, it was for an year and half when I was trying to cast the roles of Dil Chahta Hai and figure out as to who would be there in the film, so in all it was quite frustrating to wait. You have a meeting with the actor and then again you are meeting the same actor again after four months only because he was busy shooting a film for that period. You are just waiting to know whether they will do the film or not, so it was a different kind of frustration. It was more or less a period, which was a phase of uncertainty, if the film will happen or not. You meet many people and then you draw all your observations from them.

Ok Farhan, what do you tell people when you meet them and have a desire to excel in life with so much of dream and aspirations in them?

I think the most important thing for a person, who is struggling, whether as an actor or anything else, is to know about one self even if they are rejected. I think a lot of time it happens that when you go and give a test and you are all waiting to hear back and then you never hear back. And then one fine day you hear that somebody else has been cast in the film. Its better to know as soon as possible that its not worked out. And thats one thing, which we took seriously: we started doing it when Zoya used to be a casting director in films. We used to send letters to every single person who came for the audition saying that we are really sorry that things did not work out. So at least its over for them. The waiting thing is the most frustrating part, not knowing if it will happen or not. So even if you know that it did not happen, and then you know that the chapter is closed and so one moves ahead in life .I think thats very important.

Farhan, its also known that Zoya always used to scare you when you were a kid; how true is it?

True, but then you grow up gradually. Your elder siblings can lie to you.

I am pretty sure that post Rock On, you must have been flooded with singing offers.

Yes, there is one gentleman waiting outside with a similar proposal.

Ok, from the soundtrack of Luck by Chance, which one is your favourite?

The one that I have been listening often these days is Rahi Re, its the sixth track of the album and there is something about the song and the philosophy it has which I like a lot.

Whats the best thing that has happened to you luck by chance in life?

I think its probably my two daughters. Thats the nicest thing; its just that they are happy and healthy children.

Judging by your appearance it appears that you have especially made your body for this film?

After the release of Lakshya, it struck me that I should take care of my fitness. Its not really about muscles or body building exercise. The effort is only to stay fit because apart from physical fitness it also takes care of your mental fitness. You feel good about yourself when you wake up in morning. I have not done anything specific for the character I have played in the film.

Do you personally feel that there exist some politics for an individual to be a part of the film industry?

I dont think so that such things exist in this industry. If you are truly talented and have that dedication and hard work and sincere approach towards your goal then eventually you will get an opportunity and you will finally land up with a role of your caliber and choice to prove your worth. If your background is not form the film industry then I agree that an individual does encounters some difficulty but again its not true that he can never be a part of the industry. I dont think politics exist in this industry.

Lastly, in LBC you are paired opposite Konkona Sen, dont you feel the pairing is bit unconventional?

No not at all. To be very honest its just not my concern to be skeptical or think about other aspects. Casting is not my department. The only thing, which is expected of me, is to do the role to the best of my ability. Konkona is a fantastic actress and she is very talented. She is an amazing looking girl and it was a great experience working with her.

Thanks a lot.

Thanks.

cant agree with Nisha here. i think farhan will soon become a stereotype; doesnt have the flexibility like a versatile actor do. he's multi-talented and should focus more on the other aspects of the film-making.
