Rajan Singh02 Feb 2009

Q. Hi, Zoya, How much of what happened in your life is by luck by chance? A. With me a lot more has happened in life by luck by chance, I think. This debut film of mine was supposed to happen some six - seven years back and it did not happen as I had foreseen things. And then it fell into place beautifully. It's just that everything fit in perfectly.

Zoya Akhtar speaks to Rajan Singh on her directorial debut, Luck By Chance

Hi, Zoya, How much of what happened in your life is by luck by chance?

With me a lot more has happened in life by luck by chance, I think. This debut film of mine was supposed to happen some six - seven years back and it did not happen as I had foreseen things. And then it fell into place beautifully. Its just that everything fit in perfectly.

Was entering the film industry an easier process for you, considering that fact that most of your family members have been a part of the film industry?

I dont know if it was a step easier. We were in that environment through out our life, so it was a natural progression to it. And yes you have access to lots of people; you get to meet lots of people because they know your parents. They all are open to you but after that its all up to you. It took me a long time to make this film. Its all relative.

How convincing has Farhan been as a struggler in the film?

I think he is fantastic in the film but thats my personal opinion.

Zoya, how closely have you seen the struggling phase of your life?

Well I have had my own personal experiences quite different from other actors, but it was a struggle in itself. I have been a casting director before Luck By Chance and so I have worked with lots of actors during auditions. I have rejected lots of people during auditions and have also given roles to lots of people. I have worked closely with people who are new to the film industry and have come in from all over India. Lot of my friends who are now working in the film industry are people from outside Mumbai. They all have come in and found their way and have navigated through the industry so I am very close to people who are not from here and have had to really work it out.

It was during Farhans show only that Javed Saab had said that you always scared Farhan when he was a kid; you even told him that a monster would come out of the camera.

I told him all kind of things. I even told him that he was adopted and the man will come and pick him up any time. You do stuff like that with your younger sibling.

Zoya, when did you discover that your brother could sing very well?

I knew this since the beginning. We were in the same school and he was heavily involved with drama. Most of our dramas in school were musicals and he would be the lead in them. So I always knew that he could sing.  Besides he also plays guitar so in a way he is constantly singing at home. It was not a surprise for me at all.

Tell us two things, which the world does not, knows about Farhan Akhtar?

Firstly he is a certified skydiver and the second thing could be that he is a very good cook.

OK, in your debut film we see so many stars, how difficult or easy was it for you to manage them?

Besides the key cast we also have lots of cameos in the film and we needed that because the backdrop is that of the film industry. You go into spaces and situations where it would not work if you did not have actors - they all were playing themselves. But we did not have a tough time casting the cameos; most of them were very gracious and extremely supportive. They all are friends of us between Farhan, Ritesh and me. We know most of them and they were really very sweet and very helpful. They worked out their shooting schedules and they did it for us.

Whats the best thing that has happened to you luck by chance in life?

Well, too many good things have happened to me but the best thing being that how this film fell into place. Also the biggest thing that I have learnt is the value of patience, which I never had. You write a script and then you think that its an ok script. You are all set to make a film on it and then you realize that it cant be done so easily. So I think patience was the biggest thing that came to me.

Which are the problem areas and things in your opinion a struggler might encounter?

See if things are to go wrong then they are destined to go wrong. Just anything can happen. Besides being talented you have to be willing to work really hard. You have to work hard and keep attitude and have that endurance to keep at. Yes, its an industry thats run by people and its run by relationships and I think you have to be a little smart with a little amount of PR exercise. These are the things that are required to gain a foothold in the industry.

Lastly, dont you think you opted for an unconventional Jodi in your debut film?

I dont think Farhan and Konkona are unconventional at all. Among masses, Farhan does not have a pre-conceived image. On the contrary its fresh and they have an incredible chemistry on screen and they both are good actors. You cant go wrong when two people are good actors.

Thanks a lot.

Thanks.

Zoya in my opinion will come up as one of the best Directors in the hiindi film world. She should concentrate on finding good srripts and cast to fit in apart from the producers.I hope the producers will recognise her capability and come forward to wok with her.

the best part of her film-making process is certainly the urge to tell a story that is as it is in its real life situation. A film that can communicate a clear message is always well deserved to get a bow. All the best to her!
