Romy Rolly in LBC is a little loud: Rishi Kapoor

Romy Rolly in LBC is a little loud

Rajan Singh04 Feb 2009

Q. Hi Rishi ji, do you believe in luck or destiny? A. Well, in many forms of life luck plays a very important part, which is also known by the name of destiny. Its also known by the name of kismat and in this film too its the same. Luck By Chance is about the film industry and its people. I play a producer in the film and for me it was very exciting and a good chance to play this role in the film. I have not seen this in Hindi films before; the film is all about being there at the right time and at the right place.

An excited Rishi Kapoor chats up with Rajan Singh on his character, his co-stars and about his lucky break

Hi Rishi ji, do you believe in luck or destiny?

Well in many forms of life luck plays a very important part, which is also known by the name of destiny. Its also known by the name of kismat and in this film too its the same. Luck By Chance is about the film industry and its people. I play a producer in the film and for me it was very exciting and a good chance to play this role in the film. I have not seen this in Hindi films before; the film is all about being there at the right time and at the right place. Whatever kind of work you are doing and even if you are hard working or are apt in your job, you also need that element of luck and thats what the film is all about.

How did you managed to sign this film and tell us a bit about the character you play in the film?

As far as I am concerned as an actor, the whole thing was given to me on a tray by Zoya Akhtar and Javed Akhtar Saab and thats so because it was only there because of my work in the film industry over the years. The interactions I had with the people of the film industry, the way they dress themselves - I have tried to amalgamate all those things in the role of the character I am playing in this film. And thats what Romy Rolly is all about; its the name of character I play in the film. The character encompasses different aspects from people of the industry - it has the hairstyle of someone, someones glasses or even from people who wear stones.

Does the character you play in the film is based on any person from the Hindi film industry?

I would not like to name anyone but yes my character in the film has derived its inspiration from so many producers and so is Juhi Chawlas character. Her character too has been derived from some real life character.

Now since you play a producer in the film; does it also encapsulate all the nuances, which a typical Bollywood producer is known for?

Mine is a little loud character. He is little boisterous, he is a happy man and besides being a producer, he is also a manipulator. He is always behind the stars and wants only big names in his films. He is very loud and his tastes too are very loud. His house is absolutely garish and dresses up obscenely and probably thinks that its the best fashion in vogue. Even when he is socializing, he is often drinking and I guess these things attribute to the making of this character. He is also a great believer of things like astrology, astronomy, gemology and numerology. He gets havan and other things done at home.

Are there such people in the industry?

Well there are a few such erratic kinds of people in the film industry.

Tell us a bit about the plot of the film?

The film is all about the film industry and a struggler trying to make it big in the film industry, which also carries some dos and donts. I was telling this to some person few days back that its all about being at the right time and the right place. Its all about luck. Luck plays a very crucial role in some form or the other and with these things there is also a love story running with the ambience and atmosphere of the film industry.

Its the first film of Zoya Akhtar, considering the fact that there is a wide age gap between you and her, did you encounter and difficulty while shooting the film?

We are all students and there never has been any sort of pressure from any quarter. We all are students at the end of the day learning and taking directions from others. Zoya Akhtar was absolutely spot-on in all her tasks. Its also the first time that I have worked with a female director and well the experience turned out to be pretty good.

Now Farhan Akhtar is one guy who has proven his mettle, he has excelled in everything so far he has touched be it direction, acting or even singing, how did you find him?

Well Farhan is a multi talented boy and we have seen him excel in all these fields and his is going to excel in this film as well.

Tell us a bit about your other co-stars in the film

Juhi plays my wife in the film and her characters name in the film is Minty Rolly. Its been a while since I have worked with her and it was a pleasure working with her again. I have worked with Dimple too in this film. Working with Sanjay Kapoor too was a lovely experience. By and large I enjoyed working in Luck by Chance. But its important for me to add here that I have worked even with grandfather of Ritesh Sidhwani, who is the producer of the film. Riteshs father was Shankar BC and he had made Laila Majnu with me. And now today I am working his grandson so over all its all great.

Would you like to say that LBC is a different film?

How can this film be different? Lets say that this film is an entertaining fair and its not meant to break any new grounds in film world. Its just that the ambience of the film is that of the film industry. There are songs and funny moments in the film and then there are sad moments too which make up the whole film.

Now the role u play in LBC looks pretty unique, any other role in future where you would be seen in a different avatar?

Yes, I am playing a negative role in a film but I wont like to talk about that film right now.

How would rate Farhan as an actor?

Firstly, I have not seen Rock On and secondly I have not worked much with Farhan. I have not seen much of Farhans work. I have surely seen his film in the capacity of a director. Farhan was very good in Dil Chahta Hai, it would not be appropriate on my part to give him any ranking or slot him somewhere. But judging by whatever I have worked with him, he was very relaxed and composed as an actor, which is a very good trait. And this also goes on to show that you are not nervous about anything. You are well aware of whats happening all around.

What do you do in your spare time and do you fancy any roles at this stage of your career?

I spend my time like any other individual. I dont have any fancy of roles, whatever comes my way will do it.

You have mentioned the luck factor so many times in this interview, does it applies in your career?

We are experiencing this all the time and I know this for the fact. When my father made Mera Naam Joker, I was hardly 15 or 16 years of age and I worked in it. My father was also supposed to make Mera Naam Joker part 2 but unfortunately Joker part 1 did not work out and so he then made a film called Bobby where he took in two rank newcomers. Now thats me being at the right time and right place. My father was not giving Rishi Kapoor a break but on the contrary it was a film that he wanted to make. It was me who got into that place and thats called luck by chance. It was my good luck that I was working in Bobby. Everything clicked for me, be it the right film or the box office success. But thats not the end some days back I read in newspaper that initially the role of Prem Kumar for Slumdog Millionaire was offered to SRK but ultimately it was Anil Kapoor who did that role. Anil was destined to do that role. Again had Danny not been to Afghanistan to shoot for Dharmatama, Amjad Khan would have never been a part of Sholay. Its all about luck and destiny.

Thanks a ton.

Thanks.
