Fear has a new style……
In 1992 when I went to watch Ram Gopal Varma’s “RAAT”, I wanted him to make a different style of Horror/Thriller which has some style of International cinema. As before that we had witnessed the style of Ramsay and Bhakaris for couple of decades and it was a time for change. “RAAT” though not a commercial hit but had good sparks of what I was looking for. Years later the end result came in BHOOT, but then again the new style got repeated in various films like Vaastu Shastra, Phook, 1920,Raaz,etc. In all our Horror /Thriller films we had some religious angle, some forced scary shots, some larger than life reason, etc, etc. When I saw the last few horror films I felt its time for change and that’s exactly what I got in “13B”,a good thriller [read thriller and not horror].
“13B” is a story of Manohar [R.Madhavan] who along with his family consisting of wife [Neetu Chandra], Mother [Poonam Dhillon], elder brother, Sister in Law, their kids and Younger sister move to a new flat which is at 13th floor of that building. From day one some or other unusual stuff starts happening with Manohar, he does not understand why ?. Later he comes to know that a T.V serial keeps coming on their T.V which has characters almost like his family and whatever happens there starts happening in his life too. What is the mystery behind this ? To find out watch 13B.
Story is good and quite interesting. The writers have done their part with full sincerity and have given proper justification for everything happening in the film. Screen play is the best part of this film. It’s so pace, gripping and crisp that you keep glued to the screen [especially in second half]. The thriller element has been given the key importance than the Horror part, and that’s what makes the film different and interesting. Editing is superb and has no flaws, the editor knew what he had to do and it shows up on the screen. Camera work is of top notch and one does go gaga at many scenes and shot in the film.
Music by Shankar Ehsaan Loy is good but not outstanding. Also such movies don’t need music, thankfully there are just two songs and that too in first half with one paragraph only. Thus you don’t mind them.
Director Vikram Kumar has made a quite different Thriller. His way of story telling is quite different, he could have used the forced scaring scenes, but he dint. He could had used zoom and close ups of objects in the house, but he dint. He could had used dark lights and loud noises, but he dint. He could had used the tantric angle, but he dint. He did what was best for the film and has kept it quite settle and sober. The horror/ thriller angle slowly keeps growing as the movie keeps going. Few scenes like Lift one, R.Madhavan watching T.V show in Showroom, Madhavan’s Dream, The Story of Characters and Climax are superb.
R.Madhavan is fantastic in this film, watch out his reactions in every scene. You can feel his pain and fear when you watch him. Neetu Chandra is ok as a typical house wife. Poonam, Sachin, Murli and others have done their job with full dedication. Deepak Dobrial in Sp.App is outstanding.
So bol meri ‘Filmi Khopdi’ is film mein kitna hain Dum?
Dum hain, Bahut dum hain and kaafi different hain. Just a request that please keep in mind that this film is more of Thriller than horror and you will enjoy it. This time the makers have showed the Fear in different manner and not the routine typical ones, still if one or two scary scenes would had been there we would had loved it. Maybe this different style of his might not work for those who are just looking for some forced scary scenes or loud noises. People who love different and good cinema said in settle way will love this film.
RGV, Vikram Bhatt, Mohit Suri and others watch out….as fear has a new style now.
