One-off Return

One-off return

Rajan Singh24 May 2008

Q. It's a great feeling to see you back with JTYJN, but please let us know if this stay is permanent or temporary? A. I am very very thrilled to see the result of the film and the music release, you know. When the film started, I was very nervous. And as you asked me if my stay in Mumbai s temporary or permanent, all I have to say is that its very very temporary. I am here only for the release of the film. Aamir Khan defined my role for the film in the beginning itself. It was mainly like that being a producer I was supposed to see that every thing was going on in a smooth function at the sets.

He is the man behind films like QSQT, Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar and Josh but after a dream run he almost vanished. The hustle and bustle of the city life forced him to leave Mumbai and go into the lap of nature. He relocated to Kunoor in the Nilgiris. But it was an emotional blackmail from Aamir Khan that did the trick. Mansoor Khan, the man is back with JTYJN in the capacity of a producer. He talks more on the film, the reason behind his disappearance and whether will make his fifth film or not.

Its a great feeling to see you back with JTYJN, but please let us know if this stay is permanent or temporary?

I am very very thrilled to see the result of the film and the music release, you know. When the film started, I was very nervous. And as you asked me if my stay in Mumbai s temporary or permanent, all I have to say is that its very very temporary. I am here only for the release of the film. Aamir Khan defined my role for the film in the beginning itself. It was mainly like that being a producer I was supposed to see that every thing was going on in a smooth function at the sets. Aamir was unable to do the same, as he was busy with TZP at that time. Initially I never knew that what my contribution would be to the film, but as days passed by it all started to emerge clearly that what was I supposed to do for the film. The film has shaped pretty good and I am really looking forward to the release of the film in July.

Ok, during this stay of yours, how many people told you that they are thrilled to see you back?

The great thing being that almost everyone said this. I have this sense of nervousness and i know the reasons because of which I am not doing films any more. This is not something to hide. I am not trying to run away from things but it also makes me nervous that people still have expectations form me. I feel very honored but times are not conducive for me to make a film. Right now there is just nothing in my mind, which were to compel me to make a film. I cant work till the time I am not motivated. My life has now gone in some other direction so when people say such things I feel more nervous.

How did Aamir manage to get you for this film?

Aamir played his own card to bring me back and it was the emotional family card. But its good for both the side as it has also given me an opportunity to prove myself once again, though in a different capacity. I really believe that if I am playing a supportive role then I should do it with all my sincerity. I have got this opportunity and I would like to do it with the best of my abilities. It was only Aamir who could have done this by giving me no other option. I was given only 24 hours to come to Mumbai and thats how it all started. It was more like an emotional blackmail.

Do you really find any similarity between Aamir and Imran?

In terms of looks there is surely a resemblances between the two. But apart from looks there is lots of similarity in terms of commitment and focus also the way they think is at a very deeper level. Imran right now is not interested in dance and typical good looks stuff. I dont know what will happen in future but in this film he has done extremely well for himself. This film was to be made initially by Jhamu Sughand but because of certain reason it fell in the lap of Aamir. I think it was a right choice and Imran has done full justice to the role. He is doing another film called Kidnap directed by Sanjay Gadhvi and I think he will prove himself immediately in his second film too. He is much more than mere romantic roles.

Ok, why did you leave the film industry all of a sudden?

Actually it was not a sudden decision. I was actually thinking for three years post Josh, I had even signed two three films and I was trying to meet those commitments and work was on for al the films. Then I realized that I should not put up a farce, I just was not able to do these things. Actually I was not interested in living in Mumbai since beginning itself. Even before QSQT happened I wanted to live outside Mumbai and it took me almost 25 years to actually realise it. So it was not sudden as you say. I cant reveal in this interview that what I do at Kunoor but its a complete life style there.

You are also a part of the Narmada movement, tell us more?

Yes, I am associated with the movement but I dont want to bring anybody else to it. i am very much part of narmada movement and al the issues pertaining to it should come to the forefront. There are issues of global warming, soil depletion, these all are related issues and its not a radical thing. I am very much connected with it.

Do you get to see Hindi films on a regular basis at Kunoor?

I am not that regular. There is a theatre where I get to see few films. I watched Farhas Mai Hu Naa and then I followed it up with Om Shanti Om. I can chose and watch films over there.

You have time and again said this that you want to live close to nature, what does it means?

It means that we grow our own food and keep farm animals. Its a complete lifestyle.

In todays era do you find anyone promising form the film industry?

Actually I dont know much about the newcomers; there are so many people. Actually my outlook is not that if a film is week then that person has no potentials. I feel he has not found he is suited for. When I see Aamir casting for his next film, its a sheer delight. The challenge to put them in correct role is a challenge in itself.

It is good to see that such sensitive people exist today. The kind of things that Mansoor Khan is involved in, seem very essential to today's world and environment. Wishing him all the best.
