Akshay tell us a bit about your forthcoming film Short Kut?
Short Kut is primarily a slice of life film, which revolves around the journey of these two characters played by Arshad and myself. Arshad is a struggling actor who wants to become a star at any cost and I play a writer-director, who one day wants to make his own film. The journey of these two people and how they try achieve their ambition is the core of the film. So often in all our aspects of life we are presented with two choices - either we take the short cut or we go the right way and the film deals with that issue but in a very entertaining, comic way and often in a hilarious ways and also how we see these two characters and their lives cross paths with each other so it′s basically all about this only.
Any inspiration you derived from real life directors for this film of yours?
Not really but I have worked now for quite a few years in the film industry and have worked with so many directors, new directors, experienced directors, big directors, small directors whatever. It′s not that directors only observe actors, we too observe our directors and see what they do and what they don′t do on the sets. But it′s not that I have taken inspiration from one director, being on the film sets is part of our lives so certain observations come automatically. It was not something that was very difficult that one had to really do lots of research. It′s all part of our experience.
Do you harbour any aspiration of becoming a director some day?
No, lots of actors feel that one day I will make my own film but I never really feel that way, that one day I would really like to direct my own film. I don′t feel today that I will ever direct a film but at the same time you can′t predict the future that five or ten years down the line I might find myself in a position that ok let′ direct a film. But the moment if you were to ask me I would say no. I don′t think so that I am capable of making a film.
You and Arshad worked last in Priyadarshan′s Hulchul and your camaraderie is also evident in the promos of the film but contrary to that there were also reports in media that you two don′t gel along well, is it true?
It′s not true at all. I share a very good relationship with Arshad but I think that when you see the film you will discover an excellent on-screen chemistry between us. Arshad is a marvelous actor and the level of performance he has given in Short Kut is at par with the performance he had given in both Munnabhai films, which I consider to be his best performances. He was really wonderful in both the films and I think this time too his fans will be thrilled with his performance.
There were also reports in media that you have refused to promote your film and you had flatly denied opting for Salman Khan′s show Dus Ka Dum, which is an excellent platform for promotion of a film, how true is it?
One does not react to it because they are not true. How can an actor not promote his own film? It′s very strange. How could any actor for any reason not promote his own film? It actually just does not make any sense.
Short Kut the movie [Watch Videos]
You are coming with a film of yours after a long gap, your last movie to hit theatres was Mere Baap Pahle Aap, I am sure you must be pretty excited with the release and the strike getting over.
Yes, I think the strike was pretty painful for everybody and for the whole industry. It was not a good time for anyone especially when the whole world is currently gripped with the financial crisis. It affected us all and on top of this to have this strike and films getting delayed. It was not a very pleasant time for the movie business but now things are looking up and the strike is over and now films are back in theatres.
Amrita Rao looks in a very sizzling avatar in this film, tell us more?
Amrita is a lovely and a very simple girl and very easy to work with. I think this is her first film where she is looking truly glamorized and sexy. In her previous films she was always cast as the girl next door, which actually was salwar kameej kind of a girl. Actually she a very beautiful and sexy looking girl and this aspect has come out well in the film because she plays an actress in the film. I think she has really enjoyed the process of glamorizing herself. She is looking terrific in the film and I would love to see her more in such avatar in her future projects. She is a beautiful girl.
There is also a lot of buzz around about the friendship you share with Anil Kapoor. His first film as a producer featured you and his second venture too sees you in the lead role.
I keep getting asked about Anil and my friendship. I think it′s very rare that two actors become really good friends. Our friendship is not some fake or kind of publicity stunt. I don′t think Anil has cast me in his films because of our friendship; he would never do that because a good producer will never do such a thing. Casting is too important aspect of film making that it just cannot be taken for granted. If he ever had a script and feels that Akshaye is not the correct choice then he will take somebody else and that′s about it.
Is it true that actor kids or relative of actors have an easy way in the film industry?
Being son of an actor myself one is completely aware of the advantages one gets. Why should we shy away from that and say no? Of course we have a huge advantage but having said that I don′t want to defend it. Tomorrow if I want to get into the coal mining industry or some airline business it would be tougher for me than the son of a coal miner of that of a person whose family is into airline business. If I am the son of an already established politician then it′s become easier for me. If you choose the profession of your father or your mother, you will surely have a certain advantage.
Ok give us any one good reason that why should people go and see Short Kut?
I think the only reason one goes to watch a film is to get himself or herself entertained and I think Short Kut will offer you that it′s an extremely entertaining film and it′s a comedy but at the same time it′s also got a very strong story. It′s got a bit of everything romance, drama, emotions and lovely characters, It also has a very strong and superb supporting cast. Neeraj Vora because of his association with Gujarati stage has brought in a lot of fresh talent who have contributed a lot to the film.
Lastly, any short cuts have taken in life?
Not in my field. In movie making business taking short cuts is very dangerous. The more time you spend in your film the better the product is so in our business it′s not a good idea.
Thanks a lot.
