3 Idiots rating: 9 out of 10(Divya Solgama wrote on 25 Dec 2009)

Films with messages on our culture or systems are either preachy or very bold or hard hitting or simply boring. There are very few films which portrays the desired messages in the form of entertainment. Director Raj Kumar Hirani is one of those elite directors who have attempted such form of cinema in past and looking at his passion for cinema might attempt many more times in future. After taking a dig on medical and Gandhism he returns back with education system as backdrop of his latest film “3 Idiots”. Such themes have been attempted but have bit of preachy ness in it and tend to be bit low on the entertainment side. So lets find what lies beneath this film and also check out the director’s command over the film as see how much preachy he can be or vice versa ?

For a change we wont part with the story of the film, but overall is story of two engineering students {R.Madhavan & Sharman Joshi} who meet another colleague {Aamir Khan} who changes not only their life but tries to change the way and method of the college professor {Boman Irani}. Will they success in attempting the un attempted or succumb to the pressure of the world and education system. That’s definitely not to be read but to be watched.

Story is narrated in a two phases starting from the college days ending a decade later of the college life. The flashback has been properly woven in the script making it interesting and entertaining. Screenplay is superb and has hardly any flaws in it. The social message is passed on with such a great entertaining format. The movie reminds you of the homeopathy pill which is bitter but sugar coated so you can enjoy the taste and get well soon. The sugar is out here in form of humor and witty one liner used when needed in the film. There are some superb scenes one goes gaga over them like Aamir Khan’s Definition of Machine, Aamir-Kareena intro scenes, Aamir-Madhavan changing the speech of fellow student, Interval twist, Madhavan-Parikshit Sahani scene, Sharman Joshi family scenes, Sharman Joshi interview, All Aamir-Boman Irani scenes, Ragging scenes, Climax shot and many more. The dialogs are so witty and smart that you get a instant grin on your face. Editing is perfect in first half, but could had been bit better in the second especially in the anti climax shot of Mona’s Delivery scene or the Kareena marriage episode. Camera work is of fine class and captures the spirit of the film in proper manner.

Music is cool, hep and peppy. One wills surely hum “All izz well” and take it along with themselves. Zoobi Zoobi is superbly picturized and has some great visual treat in it. Behti hawa sat ha who is also one of well shot songs. Sadly Give me some sunshine is wasted in the film.

Raj Kumar Hirani is one of the major reason for making such great film in an entertaining manner. His conviction shows on the screen and the way he has handled the subject deserves a pat on back. It’s very hard to forget the Munna Bhai episodes but we forget it once the movie starts, and we should not even compare this film with them. Almost all scenes in the film have some or another reason for being there, now that’s what is a complete director with total control over the script. He knows what he is making and is total confident of portraying it on the big screen. His slap on the education system works without being preachy or boring and is hard hitting at places but all said and done in entertainment form.

Aamir Khan is like guaranteed investment where viewers have been cashing on some great movies from long long time. He takes time but when ever does a film its total quality stuff. He is outstanding in this simple performance and manages to win your heart with his sweet charms with a grin on his face which is automatically transferred on your face after watching him. R.Madhavan and Sharman Joshi give a perfect support in the film and has plenty of good moments of each to boost out. Kareena Kapoor is fine in her short and time pass role. Boman Irani is outstanding in this role, watch out his body mannerism. Parikshit Sahani, Omi and other characters are perfect as per their part in the film.

So bol meri “Filmi Khopdi” is film mein kitna hain dum ?

Dum hain, poora ka poora dum hum, barring few scenes in anti climax the film is out and out quality entertainer and manages to rule in your heart. After long time we get a film which has good message, Superb performances, good music, great one liners, story, screenplay all woven in high dose of entertaining format. Thus after watching this film we do feel we are idiots who have been enjoying and accepting useless films before this film.

    Ratings – 4/5
