In 2007, Akshay Kumar took the box office by storm and how! Four releases at the box office and all of them hitting the bulls eye at the box office. It was a dream run which Akshay himself would not have imagined doing even in his wildest dream. Namaste London, Bhool Bhulaiyaa, Heyy Babyy and Welcome were the film in question.
He has carved such a niche among the film market that the rounds doing the corner is that he is the only one who can give the Khans a run for their money. He has proven his versatility and can take any challenge that is thrown to him.
But can the same be said about the current year too? Well, that might be difficult to answer but the very fact that lot many film goers watched Tashan, a Yashraj dud at the box office, only to have a glimpse of his histrionics, says a lot about the action star. Whatever praise the film merited from those who saw the film was solely based on Akshays capabilities. As many as three films of his would be storming theatres and judging by the early response they have been getting, it should be a smooth tiding by the producers. His choices of films amply prove that he is one actor who is all set and ready to take whatever challenges thrown at him.
Singh is Kinng 8 x 10 Chandni Chowk to China
Lets have a look at the selection of Akshays movies this year.
SINGH IS KINNG - This film has been generating lots of buzz since the time it went on floors be it the unusual look which Akshay sports in the film or the controversy it has been generating among Sikh community or the plot of the film which has been kept a top secret. Anees Bazmi who had a dream run at box office post No Entry and Welcome is at the helms.
EIGHT BY TEN ( 8 x 10) - The movie is a supernatural thriller and Akshay plays the role of a clairvoyant in the film. The very premise of this film sounds interesting, though its immaterial that the film has been heavily inspired from M Night Shyamalans Unbreakable. Also the combination of Akshay with Nagesh Kukunoor gives sufficient reason for viewers to expect more. Also it would be first time that Nagesh would be working with a major star for his film. The film promises dollops of actions and some breath taking sequences.
CHANDNI CHOWK TO CHINA - Warner Bros. would be venturing into Hindi film production for the first time with this film. The most intriguing part about the film is that its semi autobiographical and the person concerned is none other than Akshay Kumar. The film will traverse his journey from his early day in Bangkok as a cook to his rise as a film star. Though nothing much is known about the plot of the film but one thing is for sure that it will have glimpses form Akshays growing up years in plenty. The films director Nikhil Advani too will leave no stone unturned to erase his bad memories of Salaam-e-Ishq.
The above-mentioned films prove to the core that versatility is the mantra, which Akshay has chosen for the future. He would also be back to his first love - action - which he had completely abandoned for a while in favour of comedy. And action is one familiar territory for him where he finds most comfortable. One important front where Akshay had been lacking for a while his mass appeal and a regular touch with the masses compared to the Khans. While Aamir has been keeping base with his fans through his various media appearances and blog site, SRK has been doing it through his TV show while Salman has just joined the bandwagon with his reality show and a blog site too.
Akshay realized this and has now filled in the loops by agreeing to do an action oriented TV show called Fear Factor Khatron Ke Khiladi. This way he would be able to gauge and know pulse of the audiences better. The TV Channel is so confident on Akshay and his mass appeal, that they are launching their channel with his show, and thus promoting the show very heavily.
There is no shying away from the fact that even if two of his films were to click this year, his stardom would be no less than those of SRK. Post Namaste London, Akshay has been playing his cards pretty well, similar on the lines of SRK. His interaction with the masses have increased, he has a TV show to boast about, doing films where he is comfortable in asking for per cent age profit and choosing variety of roles.
Akshay is the new darling of the masses and this was visible apparently during the recently held IIFA awards at Bangkok. So important was he to the organizers that his performance was scheduled for last only to sustain interest among viewers. He had no hesitation in admitting that fact and that too in front of the whole world that his last film Tashan was a disaster at the box office and now all his hopes were pinned on Singh Is Kinng. Though Akshay was being modest while admitting all this he nonetheless won the hearts of those present and had the privilege of getting the loudest applause. His rock star image is slowly seeping in - one who has the charisma and appeal to get in people in theatres. One can say this with certainty that the days of Khans are surely numbered with this Kumar.
