Spider-Man, one of Hollywood's most successful franchises is going to hit theatres once again with “The Amazing Spider-Man” on June 29 and this could become the first Hollywood movie to enter the elite Rs. 100 crores club in India.
Hollywood Producers are going all out in India to garner a larger pie in the Indian movie industry. Larger than life superhero films to spy thrillers to animation movies and innovative scripts and of course 3D has helped Hollywood films to increase their market share in India to 6.84 per cent in 2011 from 3.94 per cent n 2007.
Spider-Man is one of Hollywood’s most successful franchises, with a little over $2.5 billion (Rs 11,950 crores) in worldwide receipts. Spider-Man is all set to cast his web further and wider than ever before. On Friday 29 June, “The Amazing Spider-Man” will open with over 1000 prints in India, the largest ever release for a Hollywood film in the country, exactly 10 years after the first Spider-Man movie had released. This easily trumps “The Avengers”, which released with 800 prints. The film will release in 3D, 2D and IMAX formats and in four languages – English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu.
Kercy Daruwala, Managing Director - Sony Pictures India said – “The Amazing Spider-Man” is fittingly our biggest release ever in the country. The fact that Spider-Man is the most consistently successful movie franchise in India combined with an increased audience in dubbed versions, growth of 3D, the pre-US release date and a local connect in the film, has led to a record demand for prints.”
The first movie, Spider-Man released in 2002, collected Rs. 25.1 crores in India with 234 prints. The second Spider-Man movie collected Rs. 33.4 crores with 304 prints, while the last one, Spider-Man 3, which released in 2007 with 597 prints, made Rs. 68 crores at the box office.
“The Amazing Spider-Man” is all set to become the first Hollywood film to enter the elite Rs. 100 crores club in India, putting it in the league of major Bollywood releases and also become the all time highest grossing Hollywood film in India. Avatar is currently the highest grossing Hollywood film, which released in 2009 and made Rs. 90 crores in India.
According to Gomolo analysis, “The Amazing Spider-Man” will have a nett collection of Rs. 110 crores and gross collection of Rs. 153 crores during its run in India. It’s also going to have a bumper first weekend. On the first day, the movie could gross as much as Rs. 7.2 crores. The first weekend collection will be close to Rs. 23.8 crores and for the entire week, the numbers could be as high as Rs. 47.5 crores.
Ashok Amritraj, said in an interview recently: “India is not the biggest market for Hollywood films. India is dominated by Indian films. But, on the other hand, it has grown significantly in the last 10 years”. One thing is certain; that with a mammoth 1,000 print release and entry to Rs. 100 crores club in India, the bar for Hollywood releases in India will be definitely set higher, post “The Amazing Spider-Man” and the next 10 years could be as amazing as “The Amazing Spider-Man” for Hollywood movies in India.
