Top 20 songs of Rajesh Khanna - the timeless classics
Neetole Mitra18 Sep 2012
Besides his impeccable acting and good look, the other thing that was synonymous to superstar Rajesh Khanna was the long list of timeless songs that he featured in. Here is a collection of Top 20 evergreen Hindi songs of Rajesh Khanna, the eternal superstar! The combination of RD Burman, Kishore Kumar, and Rajesh Khanna is unmatchable. No wonder, this list of Rajesh Khanna top 20 songs, overbearingly features the deadly combination...
Our lives are full of pieces from the times long gone. We preserve them carefully and keep them at a safe distance from the present. Like that old diary with it's yellowed pages, full of non-adventures of the youth. Softly giving off that pleasant rotting smell and lulling you into a layer of comfort. It keeps assuring you that the past was not just a figment of your imagination but something tangible, lying somewhere very close by.
Something to this effect was Rajesh Khanna to me. The keeper of the past. He shaped a generation of college goers and young lovers. He was youth and romance. He was the simplicity of a charming smile. His death pushed me into that abyss of a world without a past. With him being gone everything seems perishable: Romance, Charm, Youth. It is like someone took that diary out of it's hiding and tore it to pieces when you weren't looking and now everything seems haphazard.
But there are those few things legends leave behind that shall never die. They continue to tell you that all the things you believed in are as real as your bones. And for Rajesh Khanna it will be his immense contribution to Indian cinema.
Here is a list of my favourite all time Rajesh Khanna hit songs which have truly made him immortal:
This heart wrenching number beautifully conveys the emotional plight of both Pushpa and Anand babu, joining them together in a love deeper than what could be understood by society. Kishor Kumar's voice, being ever so versatile, takes you far away with this song. Clearly one of Kishore Kumar - Rajesh Khanna's best combination.

A song of friendship, this track shows the bond between Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachhan which will later come under strain due to a change of ideologies. The trio Burman-Kumar-Bakshi have given many fabulous tracks to Rajesh Khanna's career. The song has a soothing, soulful touch like Kishore Kumar's top romantic songs.

As the lyrics suggest, this song takes you on an adventurous journey with two young lovers starting out to live life on their own terms. If you are ever feeling low because of what you heard, this is the song you need to rely on. Beautifully strung words and notes act as an instant strength giver. Just as Rajesh Khanna wipes Sharmila Tagore's tears in the video. A must song on every Rajesh Khanna songs list ever made...

Kuchh Haste, Kuchh Gam Ke. These are the memories which Rajesh Khanna will leave us with in this film and this song introduces him aptly. A very melodious number from Salil Choudhury which is brought to life by Mukesh. One of the top rare songs of Rajesh Khanna sung by some one else but Kishore Kumar.

Aradhana's Rajesh Khanna is quite a naughty character. He has his boyish charms and this innocent simplicity. This song merges perfectly with that image as he woes Sharmila Tagore from a jeep while his friend helps him with some background music. This RD Burman composition makes your feet with the tune. A fast beat song that's easily one of the best of RD Burman - Kishore - Rajesh Khanna combo.

Romantic roles was Khanna's forte. In Mere Jeevan Saathi he plays an artist. This track sees him romancing the very dashing tanuja on screen. This one sure will give you goose bump - Kishore's voice is so mesmerizing, and Rajesh Khanna's on screen romance... Easily one of the best romantic (seductive) song of Rajesh Khanna.

What I love the most about this tracks is the sensuality of the actors, the lyrics, the music, the voice and even the way it has been shot. The unblinking gaze of the camera and Rajesh Khanna throughout this video really go along with the lyrics of this song making it one of the hottest track of Rajesh Khanna ever. and probably most listened song of Kishore / Rajesh Khanna too.

This track strikes me as very different most probably because unlike most of Rajesh Khanna's songs which have been composed by R.D. Burman, this one was given soul by Hemant Kumar. Khamoshi was one of the first films which gave Rajesh Khanna a star recognition. And yes, there aren't many Rajesh Khanna - Hemant Kumar songs to be featured in a 'Most Popular Rajesh Khanna songs list'

Anand Babu (Rajesh Khanna) celebrates the pain of having lost the little happiness that you stumble upon in life, almost by mistake. Kishor Kumar wants to make you remember each line of this track. Such a lovely song, it must be in every 'best ever hindi songs' list; certainly, one of the best of Kishore Kumar - Rajesh Khanna songs.

Kati Patang gave us a bunch of great sound tracks ever made in Hindi Cinema. Pyaar Deewana hota hai, Yeh Jo Mohabbat Hai, Na Koi Umang Hai. But this particular track catches my fancy the most. There is a careless joviality about this song which makes me instantly connect it to Rajesh Khanna each time I hear it. No wonder that many women of that time commited suicide when the news of Rajesh Khanna marriage broke out. This song underlines the fact why there exists a legend of Kishore Kumar / Rajesh Khanna in the history of Indian cinema!

It was a cameo role but Rajesh Khanna made people notice and remember Andaz with this very famous track. With Kishore Kumar's trademark yodeling and the peppy composition this track must be one of Rajesh Khanna's best. The same song was sung by other legendary singer Md Rafi too. But Kishore added a different dimention to it.
Music Dir: Shankar- JaikishanLyrics: Shailendra
Movie: Andaz
Singers: Kishore Kumar

Yet another Rajesh Khanna Sharmila Tagore starer with an unusual romance. This film is a tragedy. A friendship gone bad, a marriage destroyed, a life about to end. This track seems to sum it all up for the audience. The video is a rare live footegae of Kishore Kumar singing this beautiful song that touched millions of Indian hearts. The music director duo Kalyan ji - Anand ji too appeared on the footage.

The lyrics and the soulful way Kishor Kumar has sung this track always make me feel like joining in. The sadness of having lost something valuable which shall never return is one that everyone can associate with. Surely, this one will feature as one of the top Hindi sad songs ever.

Neetole Mitra has had a life full of books and cinema. She was always finicky about picking up the right book and watching the right film. She studies Literature for graduation and Films later. Both the disciples, according to Neetole, are quite similar. It is a depiction of life through fictional narrations which hides within itself many layers of reality and a collective subconscious.
