Heroine at the box office: Has a fair chance

Komal Nahta18 Sep 2012

With Heroine, Kareena Kapoor has taken a huge risk in terms of her image. But will this risk be worth it? Will she find the audience and the critics giving her a standing ovation? Will Madhur Bhandarkar hit the bull's eye with Heroine? Has he extracted a National Award winning performance from his heroine yet again? Trade Expert Komal Nahta predicts.

This Friday will see the release of only one film, the woman-centric Heroine. It is good that UTV chose this week to release their female-oriented film because the public is biased towards hero-oriented films and against heroine-oriented movies. Since there is no opposition for Heroine, UTV can at least hope to get a decent initial for the Kareena Kapoor starrer. In all fairness to the film, it has managed to generate a good amount of buzz around itself and not just because it had started as an Aishwarya Rai film. Kareena replaced the ex-Miss World only because director Madhur Bhandarkar and UTV were unwilling to go ahead with the shooting after their Heroine revealed that she was pregnant with her first child. The film was shelved and there was almost a pregnant pause for several months thereafter. It is only then that Kareena Kapoor was brought in and the film revived.

The Halkat jawani song from Heroine is already a craze. Besides this song, the Main heroine hoon and Saaiyaan songs are quite popular. The film should take a reasonably good start on Friday. There was a time when films about the film industry never went down well with the paying public. But things have changed now. The audience is more receptive to any and every kind of drama provided, of course, only if it is presented in an entertaining and effective manner.

Do you think Heroine will do for Kareena Kapoor what The Dirty Picture did for Vidya Balan?
