It's been a learning journey for me

Q. Tell us about your character in Bachana Ae Haseeno A. My character in the film is called Radhika who is very sexy and confident girl who lives in Mumbai, on her own terms. She is a dancer with Shiamak, and has the ambitions to shine on the silver screen. She is a girl of today. Radhika, my character, doesn't feel any false modesty when it comes to showing her feelings for the opposite sex.

In 2008, the Bong Bombshell Bipasha Basu heated up the screens with Race. She chats with Sonil Dedhia about being paired with Ranbir Kapoor in Bachana Ae Haseeno and her other upcoming movies.

How do you look back to the 8 years that you have spent in the industry?

Frankly speaking its been a learning journey for me because today actors like Ranbir have visited the grooming schools and have been assistant directors as they come from a family who has been into films. I dont come from a filmi background so whatever I have learnt it on the sets and by doing these films. I would also say that I hate some of my films which I did but that has helped me and made me more mature.

Raaz was a milestone in your career but you were not offered Raaz 2 any particular reasons?

No its just that the Bhatts wanted a fresh face. As rumored there havent been any problems between us. I would also say that people today who are joining the industry would ever see a golden jubilee which I saw. I even tell John that I am one of those lucky people who has a golden jubilee attached to its name. I am not bragging about it but it feels sad to the sorry state of the Indian cinema.

The problem today is that films have become so commercialized all because of the corporate house taking over and so many multiplexes coming up every day.  Today what is important for a film to survive is the first 3 days of its release. If it gets through it then the film is a hit.

You are working with two newcomers (Ranbir Kapoor and Neil Nitin Mukesh) who are younger than your age, did you have any hassles doing it?

Why should I? If heroes who are over 40 are paired opposite much younger heroines, it is not talked about. The question always comes to any women who are elder to the guy not only on screen but off-screen too. Ashwariya is elder to Abhishek do they face any problems? Neil and Ranbir are the two most talented actors of the industry. Neil absolutely transforms himself from his off-screen image. He just magnifies on screen. Ranbir is simply fantastic.

You are doing films like Pankh and Rituparno Ghoshs Bengali movie Shab Charitra Kalponik they belong to a different genre what made you to do it?

For me the script and my role should challenge me to go beyond the limits.I go by what I feel is right for me. Pankh is a novel concept and my character in Shabh Charitra Kalpanik is something which I would never get in Bollywood.

You have done your first Bengali film how has the experience been?

It was an extremely challenging role. It is my first film in Bengali, for one thing. Secondly, I have never played a character that comes even remotely close to Radhika. Thirdly, the character is slightly older than what I am now. I have tried my best to mould myself to become Radhika in the best possible way I could. Like the character, my roots are also in Kolkata. One special reason to do the movie was to re-discover myself.

You had show interest in opening a restaurant what is happening with it?

I did want to open it but that was a few years ago. Currently I am planning to open something related to fitness as I am a fitness freak.

So is marriage on the cards?

No not yet as I had said earlier I would like to get married when I am 32 so there is still 3 years left.
