    404 rating: 8 out of 10(Divya Solgama wrote on 20 May 2011)

Ram Gopal Varma experimented with many new directors under his banners. Some of them made big from day one, few turned out to be damp squib. But then there were few more that made a spark, but the end product failed. Among these unlucky directors there was one name – Prawal Raman who made ‘Darna Mana Hain’, ‘Gayab’ and parts of ‘Darna Zaroori Hain’. Everyone admitted that he has potential and talent, but keeps missing somewhere. After a long gap he comes back again with his latest psychological thriller ‘404’ with bunch of fresh and untapped talents. Let’s find out if he has some sparks left under his sleeves or might match up with name of his film ‘Gayab’.

“404” is a story set around a Medical college and its Hostel where the fresher’s are being ragged in a healthy way by their seniors. Enters Abhimanyu {Rajwir Arora} who too becomes victim of ragging by Chris {Imaad Shah} and his friends. Abhimanyu seeks help from his Hostel Warden {Satish Kaushik} and later by his professor Aniruddh {Nishikant Kamat}. Meanwhile Abhimanyu decides to shift his room to a locked room no 404, where few years back a student had committed suicide and there was a rumor that the kid who killed himself {Gaurav} haunts the room. Abhimanyu tried to fight his fears, but after a bad ragging some unusual stuff takes place. What happens next is all the film about.

Story is superb, original and total gripping. The script takes it own time in unfolding itself and still it manages to keep you interested in the film. Screenplay is superb at many places like the Satish Kaushik Class, Imaad Intro with Rajwir Arora, The theory over ‘Nasha Sharab Mein Hota To’, Chat over Face book, Imaad and Gang giving mental torcher to Rajwir Arora, Rajwir –Gaurav chapter, Nishikants fear, Nishikant-Rajwir talks and the finale. On the flip side it’s the narration which might be object able to some as the story moves with a pretty slow pace, but if compared with the genre – it’s perfect. There are some minor loop holes, but I guess we can skip them. Editing is good, but could have been crispier. Camera work is of top notch. Background music keeps you engrossed in the film. “Kya Dekh Raha Hai” is a nice song.

Prawal Raman tries to make a unusual film, which is out of the box type film. He breaks the typical barriers of films belonging to such genre. Nothing over done or under done, it’s just plain perfect. He could had made it more dark or in a funny manner, but preferred to stick to simple style which works well for the film. It’s foolish to compare the film with International standards of Psychological thrillers, but must admit the vision and thinking of this film is on lines with those standards. Thus proving that Prawal has lots of spark left under him waiting to explode.

Rajwir gives a fine performance, though at places his freshness turns bit weak. Imaad is superb and reminds of young nasseer, wish he had more role. It was great to see Nishikant Kamat on this side of the camera after so many years. I was highly impressed by his acted film ‘Havaa Aane De’ and out here he shines brightly. Tisca Chopa looks beautiful. Satish Kaushik and others does their part well. All other new comers give proper support in the film.

So bol meri ‘Filmi Khopdi’ is film mein kitna hai Dum ?

Dum hai Mind Blowing Dum hai, but for a niche audience only who likes meaningful and good cinema. Masses will love to stay away from this film and also might find hard following it too. For people who like such films might end up getting a good treat in form of this film. The film might not have 404 reasons to watch it, but there are definitely enough reasons to watch it for sure; and if we talk about the vision then this films should not be missed at all.
