Q. A home production film is coming after a long gap. How is the feeling? A. The feeling is ok. Actually we at Vijeyta Films had stopped making films for a while. We are not businessmen, and even if you are a businessman and your film does not run at the box office then you encounter this big question mark that what is to be done next. Making films is just too much of an issue. But this time for Chamku we were all prepared that whatever we do for the film ought to be followed in a very systematic fashion
The Deols are back! Chamku is a different film asserts Bobby Deol alias Chaman Verma alias Chamku. Rajan Singh finds out how.
Hi Bobby, how are you doing?
Very well, thanks you.
A home production film is coming after a long gap. How is the feeling?
The feeling is ok. Actually we at Vijeyta Films had stopped making films for a while. We are not businessmen, and even if you are a businessman and your film does not run at the box office then you encounter this big question mark that what is to be done next. Making films is just too much of an issue. But this time for Chamku we were all prepared that whatever we do for the film ought to be followed in a very systematic fashion and for the precise reason it took time for us to comprehend the whole nuances of the business of film making exercise. The gap happened because of this only. Its been really long since the last time a film from Vijeyta Films hit theatres.
Tell us a bit about the film.
Basically it was Kabir Kaushik who had approached me with the plot of the film. When he narrated the story to me, my instant reaction was that I would do the film. When I asked him that who is the producer of the film then he informed me that right now there is none. He was in talk with few people to produce the film but it was all at a very basic level. After few months when Bhaiya (Sunny Deol) heard the story, he too liked it a lot and then we decided to produce the film. These days lot much action and romantic films are being churned out, Chamku is very different.
Please go ahead.
As far as the name of the film is concerned, anyones name can be funny but at the same time its does not mean that the individual is a funny person. The name of my character in the film is Chaman Varma and Chamku is his nickname. Its an action drama, which is serious. It has been shot realistically and I have not done such a film before. Prior to this when Kabeer was busy making his debut film Sehar, he had offered the film to me but at that time I was not interested in doing such a project. I had assured him that we will work together in future and then he came up with this subject.
Judging by the name of the film one gets the impression that its a comic film, how true is it?
Yes, people shared similar views in the beginning, when the promos of the film began people assumed that its a comedy. But let me clarify here that its not a comedy, its a different kind of film. Its quite different for the genre of films, which is releasing these days in theatres. Kabir has shot the whole film on a very serious note. The screenplay has this element of freshness in it. Its one film, which you need to watch in a very relaxed manner, you cant afford to see the film in haste.
Have you done such a character ever in your film career?
I have done such films in my career before but the only difference was that my earlier characters were based on a commercial level. This film has not been shot from a commercial perspective. Despite Chamku being an action film, the subject is pretty different. But all said and done my character in this film is very different.
Though you keep getting films at intervals but there has never been a phase in your life when you have ruled the box office. The only blockbuster you gave was Apne but again the success was attributed to Deol family. Are you doing something for it?
My film Soldier was released along with Karan Johars Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and it did more business than KKHH. If Karans debut film was a hit then mine was a super hit. I have delivered lot many hit films in my career - Gupt, Badal, Hamraaz, and Ajnabee were super hits. Its nothing like that.
Priyanka Chopra too is there in the film and her role looks quite deglamourised. Was it a conscious effort to give a deglam role to her?
Nothing was done consciously. She deliberately did not opt for this role, as it demanded a de glam role. Its a film, which is interesting, and she liked the screenplay a lot. She like the script and thats why gave her consent to do the film.
Dont you think Akshay Kumar has now successfully intruded in the territory of Punjab, once a bastion of the Deols?
I am here to talk only about my next film Chamku. It really does not make a difference.
Lastly your expectations form the film.
Well we have our hopes pinned on all our films. Be it our home production films or those from other banners we always pray for their success. We only hope that everyone benefits from a film.
Thanks a ton.
