Kidnap is not a darker version of Dhoom -Sanjay Gadhvi

Kidnap is not a darker version of Dhoom

Rajan Singh03 Oct 2008

Q. Sanjay, judging by the action and romance visible in the promos, does this film also carries a Dhoom flavour? A. Let me clarify that Kidnap is not a darker version of Dhoom. Its a different film and a different script. A director of a film tackles every script and every film in a different way so in a way its also an effort to try and demonstrate the fact that I can make films different from Dhoom also, and this stems from the fact that I have a very good script by Shibani Bhatija, who is the writer of the film.

Sanjay, judging by the action and romance visible in the promos, does this film also carries a Dhoom flavour?

Let me clarify that Kidnap is not a darker version of Dhoom. Its a different film and a different script. A director of a film tackles every script and every film in a different way so in a way its also an effort to try and demonstrate the fact that I can make films different from Dhoom also, and this stems from the fact that I have a very good script by Shibani Bhatija, who is the writer of the film. Its an original script and a screenplay and its got all the requisition of a Hindi film in terms of drama, emotions and relationship, the scope for music and the scope for providing thrills. I think this film will bring me into my elements and in me getting close in my search as a filmmaker. I repeat again, that this film has got nothing to do with Dhoom. There might be some stuff, which might remind you of Dhoom because the director is the same but its only to that degree. We are out of Dhoom phase and let others do it now.

How did you think of bringing Sanjay Dutt and Imran Khan together for this film?

See I just go by the story and that is the most important thing for me. For me both Sanjay and Imran suited the role perfectly. One interesting thing that I realized while shooting the film was that we dont have too many young actors and actresses in the industry and the only people to be blamed for this are the producers and directors.

After JTYJN, Kidnap was almost a U-turn for Imran Khan, how come you got convinced to rope in Imran in the role of a kidnapper?

I did not see JTYJN till the premiere of the film happened. But this also is a fact that by the time I saw JTYJN the whole shooting part of Kidnap was done with. So its well understood that I am not trying to change his image consciously. I just went ahead with him as he suited the role and finally cast him for my film. We worked out a particular kind of look and a hairstyle for him. On his own he suggested a tattoo, which we agreed and you can see it at his back part of neck. Finally everything stems out from the script.

Any plan to direct Dhoom 3?

Well, the Dhoom franchisee belongs to Yash Raj Films. If at all Dhoom 3 would be made or not depends entirely on them. Its their decision and you should pose this question to them. I have no problem making the Dhoom series. But in my personal opinion I would like Dhoom 3 and 4 to be made by a different director and Dhoom 5 and 6 to be made by another director. It keeps new ideas flowing.

Its also pretty strange that a film having kidnapping as its theme is releasing on Gandhi Jayanti.

I dont know much about the strategies pertaining to film release. I am a director and I only know how to direct. But now these days I keep my eyes and ears open and have slowly I have started learning about show business. I was there in Yash Raj for six years and during that period I made three films for them. Eid is always a good occasion to release your film and gives the feeling of a festive atmosphere. This time, both Eid and Gandhi Jayanti are falling on the same day. So just to benefit from these holidays, the producers and the distributors decided to release their film on 2nd October.

It also a strange irony that Sanjus film is releasing on Gandhi Jayanti and he is known for his Gandhigiri in films.

I know its a strange coincidence that film is releasing on the day of Gandhi Jayanti. I think its a positive sign and the film is going to do well. Sanju has a very interesting character in the film. His claim to fame is the role of Munna, which he enacted in Lage Raho Munnabhai. In Kidnap he is playing the role of the worlds richest Indian and his wealth is more than 50 Billion Dollars. We researched on the total wealth part, its less than those of Bill Gates but its more than those of Mukesh Ambanis wealth. Its a fictitious character and he wears the best suits available. Its a stylish character that Sanju is playing. He speaks sometimes with an accent because he has stayed in New York for a while. People will get to see Sanju in a new avatar.

TZP has been opted to be as Indias official entry to the Oscars; whats your reaction on this?

Excellent and great stuff. It is a film well directed and well intended. It has done well at the box office and at the same time its also a different kind of film. Its a gutsy film to make in the capacity of a producer and a director for Aamir Khan. I am really happy for him.

Drona is also releasing on the same day, do you fear stiff competition?

There is no competition between Drona and Kidnap in first place. I think its a holiday period and its a big weekend. The weekend starts from Thursday and because of Eid and Gandhi Jayanti there is scope for both the films to draw the crowds. Abhishek is a very dear friend of mine and we have worked together twice. Goldie Behl is a dear friend and a colleague. My wishes are with Drona and may the film becomes a big hit and I hope the same for my film too.

Thanks a ton.

Thanks.
