7 Khoon Maaf rating: 8 out of 10(Divya Solgama wrote on 18 Feb 2011)

Vishal Bharadwaj is one of our fine film makers, who love to experiment with all his films. His story telling in films like Maqbool, Omkaara, Makdee, Kaminey and The Blue Umbrella have been something different for all the movie lovers. Though almost all [Inc the kids flicks] have an element of dark shades in it, his latest offering ‘7 Khoon Maaf’ also tend to join the same category. His initial films were like picture perfect, but the latter ones lacked somewhere on the soul part. Let’s find out what lies beneath this interesting titled film.

“7 Khoon Maaf” is story of Susanna a rich female based in Goa, looking out for true love in her life. The movie portrays her relationship with her husband’s at various stages of her life. All her Husband’s starting from Possessive Major Rodriques (Neil Mukesh), Rock-star Jimmy ( John Abraham), Sadist poet Wasiullah (Irrfan Khan), Russian Spy Vronsky ( Aleksandr Dyachenko), Demanding Inspector Keemat Lal (Annu Kapoor) & Sweet Dr Tarafdar (Naseeruddin Shah) share a chapter in her life and how did she get rid of all of them is what the movie all about.

Story is based on Ruskin Bond's short story 'Susanna's Seven Husbands'. But very well adapted for a full length feature film. The screenplay reminds you of films like Shyam Benegal’s Trikaal or Ketan Mehta’s Maya MemSaheb. First half of the film is quick and total engrossing. The second half lots of ups and downs in term of narration and the plot, one moment you feel it’s going to be repetitive and another moment you witness something different. The movie has some superb scenes like Priyanka interacting with Jn.Vivaan Shah, The ballroom Dance in Army Party, Neil Nitin Mukesh’s Frustration, Neil-Goonga {Sashi Valvia } fight, John’s Rock performances, Anu Kapoor – Priyanka Chopra’s Introduction and investigation scenes, Sadist love making by Irfaan, Servants of Priyanka discussing her nature and reason to kill, Russian Vronsky speaking Hindi {Deewar dialogs, etc}, Servants interaction with Vronsky, Anu Kapoor Love Making Scenes, Naseer’s final scene and the Climax. There are some hitches in the climax, but that’s what the maker wanted, he wanted you to get engrossed in the Susanna’s character. Editing is of top notch, loved the marriage to funeral and vice versa type of scenes. Camera work is brilliant; it captures the feel and mood of the film.

Background Music is super and goes well with the film. Coming to main music its ‘Darling’ which is a fantastic song, followed by ‘Bekaraaa’ and ‘O Mama’. But in comparison to Vishal Bharadwaaj’s earlier films, the music surely disappoints.

Vishal Bharadwaaj’s story telling is superb and out here he chooses the young Vivan Shah to narrate the story from his perspective. He has kept all the stories short and direct to the point. No Sub Plots of the Male characters or in many cases the fine detailing of love and bond between the couples too is avoided. All these works in favor of the film, but on other side does not allow you to associate with any of Susanna’s husbands. The usage of bold love making scenes {Irfaan’s Sadistic love making scene and Anu Kapoor’s demanding love making scenes} is superb and very well handled by Vishal. They do not look cheap anywhere, but keeps your eyes wide open [despite the non skin show]. There is little bit of self intelligence in the movie towards the climax, which might not go well with the Aam’Mango’ people. Overall he sets up perfect mood for each character and the entire minor detailing [usage of babri masjid, campa cola, old cell phones, nuclear test, etc in background] helps the narration and shows the time span. But again there is a feeling or wanting of something more. One does have an unsatisfying feeling towards the end of the film.

Any heroine would give her saat janam to get this type of author backed performing role. Priyanka Chopra is lucky and well deserving to achieve such fantastically written role. She uses her personality, sex appeal, Facial expressions, performance, etc to each and every marriage of hers and that’s what makes it special. Among the husbands all have essayed their part perfectly except for a little let down on the Naseer’s character and the Russian Guys character. Neil, John, Irfaan and Anu Kapoor are among the best when it comes to performance. I might even say Anu Kapoor outshines almost everyone in such a small role. Vivaan shah gets a big role in this film and he manages to get his part done perfectly. But someone more experience would have been welcomed. Sashi Valvia as googa impresses. Usha Uthop is not bad.

So bol meri ‘Filmi Khopdi’ is film mein kitna hai dum ?

Dum hai bahut dum hai, but total different hai. This film will definitely keep you engrossed in it, despite of your liking the genre or not. But at end it is for a selected audience and people who love such genre film. But again if compared to vishal’s best films, this one to lacks somewhere on the soul part {but that’s very minor}, as one does want to see more and ends up a bit unsatisfied . But never the less its worth watching anytime for Priyanka’s Fantastic performance, Vishal’s Brilliant Direction, All the husbands’ characterization, all the husbands’ murders, Vivaan’s story narration, The bold love making scenes and last but not the least ‘Darling’ song. Looks like I gave you seven enough reasons for the entire movie lovers to watch the film.
