Vishal Bharadwaj has directed till now six-films; namely Makdee (2002), Maqbool (2004), Omkara (2006); The Blue Umbrella (2007); Kaminey (2009) and the recent one 7 Khoon Maaf (2011). All of his movies ranging from 3 star to 4 stars, and so hopefully he delivers such astounding movies to Indian Cinema. He also has a tendency to adopt movies based on some renowned books, or some novels, etc. His recent one, ‘7 Khoon Maaf’, too is based on a well-known writer Ruskin Bond’s short story, ‘Susanna’s Seven Husbands’.
The movie starts with the DNA sample given to one forensic expert, Vivaan Shah, with all the details of the victim, Susanna Anna-Marie Johannes. Tears went down his eyes and the story moves further narrating his past in front of his wife, Konkana Sen Sharma. He starts with the normal introduction of one the most innocent as well as unlucky girl in town, Susanna Anna-Marie Johannes, which was followed in background under the voice-over given by Vivaan Shah.
From there on Vivaan narrates how she got tied down with her first husband, Major Edwin Rodriques (Neil Nitin Mukesh). He was very possessive, egoistic, mean and cruel to his workers and juniors, and much more. With his sadistic behavior, Priyanka killed her first husband which looked like an accident. At the funeral, she got impressed by Jimmy Stetson (John Abraham), who is a guitarist, singer and a rock star. Later she found that he is a drug addict, womanizer, and cheats her. So with the help of her associates, she kills him also. After that she met Wasiullah Khan (Irrfan Khan) who is a poet. She falls in love with him and gets married. He behaves a bit like women but during night while making love he beats women to prove that he has man, a wild man, inside him. To get rid of him she kills him also. Now she met a Russian agent, Nicolai Vronsky (Aleksandr Dyachenko), at a derby race and they both fallen for each other. Later she discovered that he was already married with two children. In the sense of getting cheated, she finished him also. Enter of Intelligence Officer Keemat Lal (Anu Kapoor), who demanded for sex to wipe out the murder case legally. Later on he became addicted to her body and blackmailed for marriage. After marrying him, it was ofcourse unbearable for Susanna to sleep daily with Keemat Lal and so definitely it was now his turn. After killing Keemat Lal she was highly mentally disturbed with his life and got seductive with Vivaan, who prior was working there as a child labor but Susanna admitted him in school and later in medical college. He got very upset and left her forever. In depression she tries to commit suicide but got saved by Doctor Modhusudhon Tarafdar (Naseeruddin Shah). As he was bankrupt he decided to marry Susanna, kill her and to take her belonging property. However after marriage Susanna discovered his evil plan and after then his fate was already destined. She kills each and every of her husband’s like the way it appears that they died in freak accidents, in whichever manner.
Doctor Modhusudhon Tarafdar was her sixth-husband, and now finally she moves to marry seventh time with her 7th Husband, who already knows her all murders and sins, and still he accepts her with all love. And this time, they both lived happily ever-after. But who’s that seventh-husband? The only way to find that is to watch the movie.
Vishal Bharadwaj has delivered us a complete experimental movie no matter in any terms. Whether it would be narration, scripting, direction, handling performances by all the cast especially delivering from Priyanka, its music, dialogue, entire tone of the movie, and just everything from its first frame till the last frame. Vishal yet again proves that he is a class-director, and can create magic with his art and craft, no matter how the story is, how the script is, and whoever is performing. In terms of seven different stories, which are connected to each other, you will find Keemat Lal’s and Russian Agent’s story a bit of witty funny and more impressive than others. Not only that, as per the script and story, he also justifies each and every character by what purpose he/she is doing in each and every of their action/reactions. In terms of Susanna, he also justifies to the audience that why she is killing each of her husband’s while she has the option to leave or can throw him out of her life, instead of killing them. He justifies in just single 2min scene with a very few dialogues given to their workers/associates, and that’s what the art is called in terms of directorship.
Priyanka gives yet another award worthy performance, and this time she will definitely win many awards for this film. Her performance was stellar, but her make-up was very bad. As she was characterized as an old woman, it was looking something is deliberately has pasted over her face. She was looking complete un-natural and un-realistic. Rest of the cast gives equally support through their level of performance, including senior actor Naseeruddin Shah. His son Vivaan Shah was impressive, but credit goes to Bharadwaj because his given character makes his performance only better. In typecasts, Usha Utthup amazes through her role, but again credit goes to Bharadwaj.
As I said earlier, this film is a complete experimental and you will only like if you are a cinemagoer from your hair to your toe, and if you would love to watch something different and not seeking for some entertainment. Factually, this film is not for aam-janta-janardhan, but is for selected people and only those selected people will appreciate this selected piece of art. And for those selected people, this film is a rare gem and please don’t dare to miss it.
