The name of my character in the film is Meghna Mathur and she knows this, that she does not wants to be a model but wants to be a supermodel. Fashion is a very interesting film with interesting characters. In the film there is a major graph to my character, she comes from a small town and wants to be successful and become a model. After that its her rise and fall and everything around. She is very clear about her goals in life, she comes to Mumbai and very soon attains success. I think she is destinys child, something or the other keeps happening in her life.
You are looking very confident in the promos of the film.
Yes, thats the inherent quality of Meghna. She starts of her career on a very confident note and when she becomes successful then that confidence turns into arrogance and thats her time for fall. Nobody in the industry can handle an arrogant person even if you are on top. I think humility is the biggest virtue and thats the main moral of the story.
The film was awarded with an A certificate; there were news in certain section that the film has some steamy scenes.
A certificate has been given to the film because of drug abuse scenes. Actually this whole hot and steamy thing has been blown out of proportion. I am not denying it, yes; there are scenes in the film which people will realize once they see the film. But I have seen lot more intimate scenes, which were UA certified. The intimate scenes are not given that much importance in the film, Fashion is more of an emotional drama.
Dont you think so that a certain section cine goers would be deprived of the film because of the certification?
No, not at all. There have lots of such films which had an A certificate but they turned out to be super hits. For example Race that was released in the beginning of this year is one the years biggest hits. Life in a Metro is another example. It does not necessarily mean that its not suitable for children. There were two scenes in the film to which censor board had few reservations. There is a scene in the film where there is a scene of how you take drug. It was a substance abuse shot - we could have easily taken that scene out of the film and got a UA certificate, apart from this there is nothing else in the film which can be labeled as adults only material. But those two scenes were the turning point in the characters life. Madhur took a decision that he would rather take an A certificate than make any changes in the film. He was also very upset because in the past few of his films like Traffic Signal and Page Three had shown this in a bigger way but they only had an UA certificate. But we have to respect the Censor Boards decision; they have taken this decision in context of todays scenario when smoking ban has now been implemented. There is nothing in the film which will make you cringe while watching the film.
Do you think Madhur Bhandarkars female characters can be classified as women of today?
Madhur has made films, which are mirror images of what is true, but Fashion is lot different from his past films. This is also the first time that Madhur is making a film which is more fiction than reality. Fashion is a completely fictional story and is not derived from any persons life. It is not a biopic neither its a docudrama on the fashion industry. There have been instances, which have been picked up and have been incorporated in our characters lives but let me also add that the film is not an expose. As far as Madhurs heroines are concerned, its the first time that a Madhur character will have so many ups and downs and it has been beautifully essayed by such talented actors. It took me six months to say yes to Madhur. I was not sure of taking the role in the beginning.
Tell us a bit about Kanganas role?
When Madhur told me that Kangana is doing Shonalis character, I knew this that it was perfect casting. You need someone like her for the character; apart from this she has also got the body structure of a model. I really had to work hard from my part (laughs) but Kangana had it. Her wild mane and her hair, I think just suit the role. When you come out of the film, I am 100 per cent sure that her performance will blow your mind. She is so convincing as Shonali.
Did you find any similarity between Meghna and yourself?
Similarities are only till the fact that we both hail from small town. I had to do opposite in many, many ways as to what I am as a person in real life.
Priyanka Chopra - Madhur Bhandarkar
Since the premise of the film is fashion, I am pretty sure that you would have gone for many clothes and looks too.
I had 137 changes in the film and thats lot of changes. I have five looks in the film and it was all discussed in the beginning of the film itself. There is one when I just land in Mumbai, then when I become a model. I sport a different look when she is going through a turbulent phase in her career. The climax of the film too shows me in a different look.
You also had an accident while shooting for Vishal Bharadwajs film Kaminey.
Yes, I fell very badly. Shahid Kapoor was sitting behind me on a bike and thankfully because of his quick thinking, he put his hands on my face because of which his whole hand got scratched else my whole face would have got bruises. The road where we were driving was full of potholes and was not a pucca road. The bike kind of went off gear. I was going at a very fast speed.
There was also this news that Kangana had some problems with the posters of Fashion and she felt insecure.
She has not told that to me, we have been meeting very often, as she is a good friend of mine. Its not something she has mentioned to me. The film is what it was supposed to be. All the characters knew in the beginning itself that the story is told from Meghnas point of view. Every character in the film is very important in her life. Kangana has a very integral part in the film and so does has Mugdha. Fashion is the story of these three girls. I dont think so that she felt insecure, it was a story that just came about. I think we all are there in the hoardings; the first teaser of the film had all of us. They all are integral part of the film.
Lastly, can we say this that Priyanka Chopra badly needs a hit at this stage of her career?
I dont know about that, I had my share of hits and flops both in past. Each films comes with its own destiny, you never know the fate of a film. If my films do well, I will be happy and if they dont do well I will feel upset and thats so because I put in lots of efforts in each film of mine. Every one desires for a hit only, nobody desires for a flop. I hope the same for every film. I do films because stories strike me and I like to do different kind of films. I like picking different kind of subjects and characters, which could be remembered for long.
Thanks a lot.
