Shah Rukh Khan on Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi

Shah Rukh Khan on Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi

Rajan Singh08 Nov 2008

Q. Shah Rukh, you have recently turned 43, what’s the secret of your eternal youth? A. I have always said this that I don’t have a fixed regimen for my fitness. When I was busy doing Dard-e-disco (Om Shanti Om) then obviously it took two to three months to come to that physique level. Few days’ back my friends were asking me the same thing. My motto is only thinking about good thoughts and don’t think ill will about others. Don’t think well about others but at same time don’t think badly too. Actually these thoughts come to you as you grow up, my hairs have all turned white and I apply dye to blacken them.

Shah Rukh Khan discusses his two characters in Aditya Chopras Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, with Rajan Singh

Shah Rukh, you have recently turned 43, whats the secret of your eternal youth?

I have always said this that I dont have a fixed regimen for my fitness. When I was busy doing Dard-e-disco (Om Shanti Om) then obviously it took two to three months to come to that physique level. Few days back my friends were asking me the same thing. My motto is only thinking about good thoughts and dont think ill will about others. Dont think well about others but at same time dont think badly too. Actually these thoughts come to you as you grow up, my hairs have all turned white and I apply dye to blacken them. You only have to think good things about others. It was almost 10 years back that I had decided that if I am not able to think well about others, I wont think badly about them too. Whenever anyone tells me that something is not happening or something is not turning out to be good then I never believe that person, I only think that if we keep working then in the final run everything will turn out to be good.  I think that gives me lots of ease. I constantly keep working. My film Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi will release soon and I am working a lot for it, I have been working for my cricket team - Knight Riders. I also do endorsements, I do live shows, I play with my kids and all these never disturb me or I never get stressed. I always smile. You will never find me in an angry mood because I dont think ill about others. If I have met you for just once then I often think that whatever happens with you is good only. I think thats the best way to remain healthy.

Also the publicity campaign of your forthcoming film Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi started on the day of your birthday, was it a conscious effort?

All I can say is that its happening only because of the love Aditya Chopra and Yash Ji have for me. Normally I never praise my films; the only effort is to do good work so that the film turns out to be good. Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi is very special to me because Adi has made a film after many years. He had called me few days back and informed me that he would to stopping the publicity campaign of his film for a while and the only reason he cited was that he wanted to start everything on the day of my birthday. So in a way this was the gift he gave me on my birthday and I am very happy about it. Its a special film for me, its a commercial film and inshallah people will like this film. Adi had shown me a major portion of the film few days back and it has turned out to be very good. Normally Aditya never shows his film to anyone. I have been working for the past 18 years non-stop in Mumbai. Last year too I had celebrated my birthday with media when Om Shanti Om was on the verge of its release. The first song of Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi has gone on air few days back and I am pretty sure that people will come out with comments on my hairstyle and my moustache.

MohabateinMohabatein

Shah Rukh tell us a bit about this film, heard you are playing double role in the film?

There are two characters in the film and the plot of the film is very interesting. Whenever I narrate the story of this film to other people, Adi always says that I am "intellectualizing" the plot of the film and am narrating it in a boring fashion. Let me clarify this beforehand only that its a funny film and its a comedy. Obviously this film has been produced by Yashraj Films so its bound to carry the flavour, the banner is known for. Also Adi has come out with a film after a long gap. DDLJ was a great experience where I got an opportunity to work with the biggest film ever made. Then in Mohabatein I got to work with Amit Ji when he had just made his comeback. This is a special and a different film. The plot of Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi revolves around a common man. For years I have been coming in front of people in form of either Raj or Rahul or Om. Normally we promote the heroes of our film in such a way so that people aspire to become like them. In our day-to-day life we all are very simple people. Adi and I wanted to introduce such a character in our film, which after seeing people did not aspire to become one like him but on the contrary would say that its me only!!I wanted to do an anti thesis of Raj and Rahul that I have done for years. This character is in complete contrast to what I have played before. I have this inherent desire within me that after seeing this film every wife or girlfriend or girl should say that he is the best hero. Its not important to be Rahul or Raj but its important that they should say that he is the best. I had done Chak De India earlier but that was bit serious actually whenever I talk about this film it always brings a smile on my face. I like this film a lot.

This time again your heroine is very young than you.

If you were to bring any actress in front of me, she would always be younger to me. The other day I was calculating about my co stars and then I realized that post Don till OSO, be it Priyanka or Deepika or Chak De girls, they all have been younger to me. I have worked with some 20 to 22 beautiful new girls and thats like a boon to me from Gods side. Having been in acting profession for the past 17 to 18 years one tends to start acting in a similar fashion. The fact being that whenever I work with the fresh lot of people, they do respect us but there is no pressure on them from nay quarter. In any case people often say this that SRK acts like SRK in his films. They come and express the scene in a different way and instead of me telling them that this is wrong and you act like this so because I want it in a particular fashion, I have started acting and reacting to them. I have realized this that since the time I have started acting with the newer lot, my acting capabilities have improved a bit. And I am saying this because after having worked for so many years, I am in a position to analyze things. Its very interesting to be working with them and I am improving as an actor working with them.

DDLJDDLJ

You have turned 43 recently; in retrospect do you visualize the ups and downs of your life ever?

Actually I am bit lucky, I have never encountered downfall in life. I have been climbing only and sometimes it looks bit strange. I was talking to Adi few days back about RNBDJ and then for a moment I realize that its been so many years since we worked together for our first film DDLJ. The film is still running since the time it was released. And now we are ready with another film of ours. It was then that I realized that we both are still the same as when we were during the making of our first film DDLJ. I personally think that one should think about his or her rise and downfall only post retirement. I have never ever given a thought if I have done good work or bad work. Actually it also pains my producers and directors that the moment any film of mine gets released then I move on to my next film. Most of my friends have complained about this but I finish things and then move on. I have still not sat down and enjoyed my success. I have kept them all for my retirement, when I retire then I will see my films and feel happy or feel sad. I never think about any phase of mine, sometime I read in newspaper that my phase is over and then the next day I read that I am ‘Baadshah. My wife often tells me that she has seen me get up and work and this is what I have been doing work

Lot many versions of RNBDJ are splashed on the net, if only you could throw light on the plot of the film.

Its difficult for me to explain. I had discussed this issue with Adi that should I tell media about the roles I have in the film if such a question is asked me. It really feels very strange and I get an awkward feeling when any actor replies by saying that “Iss baat ka pata toh aapko film dekh kar hi chalega”. I just dont want to say such a thing. There is nothing any secret to my characters. If I were to narrate the story of the film it will easily take some two hours so it is not the right thing to do. When this film was being made then on the internet I had read so many plots of this film, one of the stories mentioned that the plot revolves around a 45 year old man who marries a young girl and stuff like that. Let me clarify this that the actual plot has got nothing to do with those stories and then I thought that let them weave stories and let them keep thinking. Obviously its a kind of love story where I am not young as I used to do before. Its a matured love story and is similar to films like which Hrishikesh Mukherjee made in the 70s. Adi has given his own touch to the film and the girl in the film is just fantastic. The movie is not very crowded and has only two or three main characters. Its a very cozy small film. If you are in love or wanting to be in love then you will start respecting the character of the film once you have seen it. You will say this that the character is just like me and he is the best.

We see you in two get-ups in RNBDJ and both the looks are in complete contrast with each other, did someone inspire you for your looks in the film?

When I was shooting for Paanchvi Paas, I was flooded with many videos of participants who took part in the show. Once when I was going through one of the videos, I came across this gentleman and then I decided that I would base my elderly look on him. He was a very nice gentleman and he was there for the show unfortunately he could not make it to the finals. I have not yet told this to him. I hope he does not read this interview. The character that sports a moustache is Surinder Sahni and is an employee of Electricity Board. The gentleman too worked with a similar department. The younger character was based on another participant and if I am not mistaken his name was Bobby. Once he came and told me that he looked like John Abraham (laughs). Both the characters are based on them only. I have tried to capture their simplicity.

Thanks a lot.

Thanks.
