Q. Hi Karan, you must be a happy man right now. A. I would like to throw a party but I am too exhausted to do anything right now so I will party internally. I come from the school that I will wait for a week and then celebrate. I dont understand that how people celebrate immediately before anything is out there in open I mean in terms of box office? I would ideally like to give a week before the final celebrations.

An elated Karan Johar speaks to Rajan Singh on the success of Dostana

Hi Karan, you must be a happy man right now.

So its basically a wait and watch policy on your part?

Thats the way it works with me. I have got great feedback from all the cinemas and I have people calling me from all over. I never had my phone beep so much, not even on Diwali when you get all those messages. Its been a constant kind of array of messages and its great because its like a new beginning for Dharma Productions in a certain sense because Dostana actually flags off many films that will come from Dharma Production in next few years. It really needed to kind of work at the box office and we are happy with the response.

Also Karan, the latest about the film being that it has been banned in Pakistan.

Oh really! I have no idea. I heard three days back that the film was passed without any cuts. There was a midnight show of the film before its release in Pakistan and the show was packed. May be this news has not yet reached me, I am not aware of it. I cant comment further as I have no details.

DostanaDostana

Ok, which was the best message you received after the first show of Dostana got over?

Well the greatest message was from SRK (Shah Rukh Khan). He sent me and the whole team of Dostana, a really fantastic message. He wrote to John, Abhishek, Priyanka, Boman, Kiran just everyone associated with the film. He saw the film and laughed, his children loved it. He had mentioned the most wonderful things in his message to me especially. He was well aware of the fact as to how important this film was to me and this was my first outing really without him. So it was more like in the sense ki jab bachha bada ho jaata hai. I really wanted his love, support and all the blessings. He is very happy and I knew that he would always be there for me but it was important for me that he liked the film and enjoy it, which he did. That would be the best message in my inbox.

Ok, and the worst message you received from any one?

If you know the industry then you will realise that no one sends you awful messages. The message is circulated among each other. Well, somebody messaged me his review of Dostana, which I think he does it on a weekly basis. That was a pretty interesting message and it was a wonderful play on words. So that was the only negative message I got from this gentleman which I got but I look forward to his SMS reviews every Friday. I was happy that he decided to send it to me as well. I could read it first hand as opposed to someone else forwarding me the message. This gentleman has an opinion and I am glad that he shares it with all of us. More power to this gentleman, he thinks we care and maybe we do.

Ok, Karan, if you were in a similar situation like the one I saw John and Abhishek in the climax of the film, would you do it?

If I have to save my friendship, I will do it. I think it was an extreme situation and what they did was also extreme. If you see the film, you will also see that they messed around with a child, they also tried to break their best friends relationship and obviously they have acted this whole gay thing. Later on the whole thing boomeranged so I thought that it was a very fitting climax. In the climax Bobby says that ki tum dono ko gay banne ka bada shauk hai to yeh kar lo and eventually when they do what they are supposed to do, which I wont discuss here, it all for friendship sake. So sometime you do the strangest thing in love and friendship. If I am asked to do an extreme thing, I will do it for the sake of friendship. And thats what the boys do too in the film.

So Karan Johar will do anything for the sake of friendship?

Well Karan Johar has done so many things in the last few years. From making a 50 Crore film on infidelity to now a film on this topic, I think if any one says that Dharma Productions make only bubblegum films then they need a quick check.

John-AbhishekJohn-Abhishek

Can we now say this that Karan Johar is now a grown up man?

Well, I had got a very interesting observation, KKHH (Kuch Kuch Hota Hai) was all about loving your friends, K3G (Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham) was loving your parents, KANK (Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna) was loving you neighbours or someone elses wife and now Dostana is all about loving the same sex. All the loving have changed over the last decade and now I dont know what I will make next. Its going to be loving something else probably.

You look sleep deprived, why is it so?

I am exhausted and I am in the middle of so many things and so many productions. A film just got released; few are in pre-production stages while others are in postproduction stages but its great that I am doing precisely those things I am good at and thats making movies. There is nothing better in the world than making movies.

Do you foresee any figure in crores this will touch in next few weeks?

I am filmmaker predominantly and I have never known how to follow these facts and figures. How is the opening in Indore? How did the film fare in CP Berar region? How was South doing? I think distributors and exhibitors best handle these things and my job is to put a film to the audiences in the best possible manner. We get stuck with all these things. I went to a party last night and some 15 to 20 people accosted me at the entrance and said that they loved the film and thats success for me. I dont know the facts, how is the occupancy or how is the film doing in PVR is not my concern. I have no idea of these things and we have made a film with all the love and conviction.

So basically you hate calculations and statistics

Well I dont hate them. Its part of business and everyone wants to have big figures. Its all relative. I see ads saying "biggest opening ever, "historic opening" - how many times have you gone through it? What the hell is history? History is changing every week. My idea is make a good film, hope they do well, hope they connect with people, and make the money but dont get obsessed with trade. The trade sometime obsesses about stupid things.

Whats the status of your next film My Name is Khan?

We are starting the film in December in Los Angeles. I am excited, nervous, anxious all rolled into one. Basically I am happy to direct SRK and Kajol again. The film is an ensemble cast and there are big established names in the film but SRK and Kajol are able hold to hold every frame of the film.

How did you think of mentioning Gabbar Singh as someone who is gay?

It was basically Tarun Mansukhanis idea and we fell down laughing when we narrated it first. Its the weirdest concept. There has never been an iconic film like Sholay and iconic villain like Gabbar. Making Gabbar as gay was really hysterical; it was so funny that it was important to incorporate this into the film.

Ok, your final words on Dostana?

Well Dostana is making friends everywhere and hope it continues to do so. Please go and watch the film if you have not. Its truly a feel good fun film and makes great viewing in times of recession. The film is recession proof I mean if you are stressed about falling revenues or dipping stock prices, everyone needs a good laugh and Dostana is a great laugh.

Thanks a lot.

Thanks.
