Rajan Singh caught up with an excited Deepika Padukone on stunts and a new look in Chandni Chowk To China
My action director has done a wonderful job in the film. I sport two looks in the film - one is the action look and Chinese, while the other is more Indian and is bit glamorous. Mallika Bhatt has done my make up for the film and trust me it was not easy to do the Chinese look. I think we have managed to pull it off. I would also give full marks to Nikhil Advanis vision of going ahead with a look like this. I dont think so that too many people would be comfortable carrying off a look like this. Obviously its a team effort and everyone has worked really hard for the film and have managed to get the looks right.
How was it doing action and stunt for the first time in your film career?
I think when you are doing action scenes then risks are always involved. I have never been part of action films before so I dont know much as how its used to be but I definitely know that I have gone through a lot in this film by doing death defying stunts as its called. While shooting for the film, I had injured my ankle thrice over the same place but its part and parcel of the profession and I agreed to do a film like this. I had mentally prepared myself that if I am going to do a film like this then injuries are bound to happen but then again we had DD from Hong Kong who helped us with our stunts. He was a martial arts choreographer on Kill Bill; he has worked closely on films like Kung Fu Hustle, Matrix. He is a fantastic action director who helped us pull through some amazing stunts. His wonderful team was with us for almost three months and they were very happy with the way we pulled off our stunts.
Chandni Chowk To China
Akshay is the undisputed Baadshah of stunt scenes; did you imbibe anything from him?
Akshay and I have a very interesting fight sequence in the Chandni Chowk To China and I am really looking forward to it. I have yet to see those sequences. But actually I have learnt a lot from Akshay Kumar because he is someone who has done lots of action before and it was Akshay who taught me that action is not about tensing your body or being aggressive but on the contrary its more like treating it like a dance sequence and being graceful. We have done a wonderful fight sequence together in the film. I think he is a wonderful dancer but I think that you get to do action with a star like Akshay Kumar once in a lifetime and thankfully I got that opportunity. All credit and thanks goes to Nikhil for this.
So now Akshay Kumar has a competitor.
Yes I would like to believe that I am the next female Akshay Kumar.
You must have gone through a grueling training schedule for Chandni Chowk to China, how difficult was the whole schedule?
Yes, I trained for about four to six months with my trainers who had flown from Hong Kong and apart from this I also did intensive training for about eight hours every day. The whole experience was completely worth it because when you are shooting in a place like China things gets really difficult because of its climatic condition, which is very cold. When we were shooting over there, China went through a cold wave so you cant really be in the middle of the Great Wall of China and wonder what stunts to do. To overcome this we had rehearsed everything and by the time we started shooting the film everything went off very smoothly.
After you, its the turn of Anushka Sharma to make her debut opposite Shah Rukh Khan, do you know her as she too is a model?
Well actually I have known Anushka for a long time and we both did modeling together when we were based in Bangalore. I think she is extremely fortunate and I just hope that her career takes off as well as mine did.
Its also said that Deepika hates to follow fashion trends, is it true?
Yes, you are bang right. I never follow any fashion trend.
If you were to make a choice between watching an SRK film or an Akshay Kumar film - which one will you prefer?
I would equally watch an SRK film or an Akshay Kumar film in equal measure. I think both of them are kings in their own way as both of them are extremely hard working. They have been around in the industry for more than 15 years while for me its been just a year for me in the industry so I am no one to comment. Both the actors are exceptionally good to work with and most importantly I have got to learn from both of them.
Is there any sequence in the film where you really got scared while performing it?
Off course one definitely gets scared before doing any stunt - whether its stunt on ground or if you are flying up in the air - both are equally scary. But I think its all about being confident and being sure. The minute the director says "action" you just cannot think twice, you have to be extremely sure of what you are doing and then go for it because if you are not sure then thats when you get injured and thats when you could get hurt. You have to be extremely confident of what you are doing.
Tell us a bit about the plot of the film?
The film traverses the journey of a cook who goes from Chandni Chowk To China and then its about mistaken identities and along the way he falls in love.
Deepika, lastly you look ravishing in this new look of yours, will we get to see you in the same look in other film of yours?
I would love to because I have got some very positive reactions for my new look but more than that I feel very confident about this look. Yes most definitely I would love to.
Thanks a lot.
