Sanjay Dutt on Mumbai terror attack

Rajan Singh10 Dec 2008

Q. Hi Sanjay, has Mumbai come under some evil eye? A. We cant say this that Mumbai has come under the shadow of some evil eye. The repeated disgusting things, which are happening with this city, are shameful and disgusting. Yesterday only someone told me that in this year only India has experienced some 90 blasts across the country, which is a huge number. People feel about this city, as Mumbai is the financial capital of this country. But I would like to add here that even in small places like Kashmir, blasts keep happening every single day, why dont people take out peace rally and morchas.

A disgusted Sanjay Dutt shares his feelings about the recent terrors attacks on Mumbai

Hi Sanjay, has Mumbai come under some evil eye?

We cant say this that Mumbai has come under the shadow of some evil eye. The repeated disgusting things, which are happening with this city, are shameful and disgusting. Yesterday only someone told me that in this year only India has experienced some 90 blasts across the country, which is a huge number. People feel about this city, as Mumbai is the financial capital of this country. But I would like to add here that even in small places like Kashmir, blasts keep happening every single day, why dont people take out peace rally and morchas. We should protest for all of India. India is under threat.

On 3rd December at the Gateway of India, your wife Manyata took an initiative in the form of a peace rally, will it be wise to sat that she actually reminded of the legacy of your father?

You can say this. The initiative, which Manyata took by holding a peace rally at the Gateway of India, is really commendable and I think its a good thing. I had encouraged her to do this rally. The most surprising thing being that it took me almost four hours to travel from Bandra to Regal cinema and could not be there on time. But from what I heard later on people in large number had turned up at the Gateway and all of them were full of anger about the terror attacks. I dont blame the normal Mumbaikars or the Indians when they react like this in such a situation.

The anger this time in the masses looks very severe; I think you will agree with me when I say that the momentum has to be sustained.

If this momentum were to get over then all this protests and anger just amount to nothing. We are all citizens of this country and we all have right for safety and security, we also have the right to choose people and to choose our leaders. I think its high time that we now choose our own leaders - leaders who have the ability to take aggressive stands when it concerns safety, security and welfare of people. The time of debates and discussion is gone. Debates and discussions have been going on for the past 50 years; you know what I am trying to say. They ought to take some concrete steps now. George Bush took a concrete step for Iraq, though it can be debated if its was right step or a wrong step, but he took a concrete measure and sent his troops to Iraq. Its become essential to take concrete steps now after all its our country.

After everything can I say this that this time its the politicians of this country who are to be blamed?

Well you cant blame the politicians for just about anything. Our intelligence machinery is pretty weak. While reading newspapers and seeing TV news channels I got to realise this that RAW had warned about such a thing much before to the authorities. Why was it that no one paid heed to their information and RAW is a very important wing in our security system? Our weapons need to be upgraded, we dont have good tools and for this, hats off to our jawans, commandos and to the Mumbai police. They just put their life in danger to save us. Let me tell you that the army gear, which a normal American soldier wears, is worth one and half crores. That includes his jacket, the microphones, the headgear, night vision just everything. When I was seeing the whole operation, I was surprised that they were communicating through cell phones. We need to equip our soldiers with such latest things. There must be individual channels so that there is no obstruction in proper communication. Our people had no night vision, they all are commandoes and they should have such things. If they had access to night vision stuff then I personally feel that the whole operation would have got over in flat one day.

Dont you feel that the security of our politicians now no more should lie in the hands of NSG?

Well, every Indian should be endowed with proper security. What I mean to say is that we citizens of this country are not second-class citizens. This thing should not be portrayed that politicians and bureaucrats are first class citizens and we all are second-class citizens. Its really sad and a matter of grave concern and its not that I am saying such a thing, the whole world is saying this. Its our country too.

Sanju, terror attacks happened on the Taj, Trident and Oberoi hotel, Nariman House and the CST, do you feel its a defining moment for Mumbai?

Look, you cant take things lying down. Every time we get to hear this that Mumbai will bounce back. I know this that Mumbai will bounce back, people out here have that grit and determination and it will bounce back but amidst all these we must not forget this whole incident. So many people dies because of this terror attack, commandoes died, hostages died, staff of the hotel died, so much of property was damaged because of all this, its something that should never be forgotten. Its a matter of serious concern and every Indian should take this very seriously.

The whole city is missing your father Sunil Dutt in such a time of crisis.

Thats absolutely true. Someone told me the same thing yesterday. Had Dutt Saab been alive today I am pretty sure that he would have stood right there where you guys stood when the operations were on. He would have stood amidst those flying bullets. We miss him and we need politicians like him who are selfless people and who love their country and the people of their country. I still have the memories when Mumbai was reeling under the floods and he stood in the middle of the floodwater helping out people.

Lastly, any message you would like to give people of this country?

The pain we suffered because of the terror attacks and the wounds it has inflicted should never be forgotten. Wounds do get healed with the passage of time but the scars remain forever. As Indian we have to become one, unite and then fight for our demands. We have the rights to ask for our demands. I am talking about change. Lastly I would also like to add that we witnessed such a successful rally at the gateway few days back but there were also few elements that were using it as a platform to convey their evil designs. Few SMSs were circulated to people urging them not to attend the rally which Manyata had organized as Sanjay Dutt is an accused in the blast case. I am ashamed of such a thing and with such people of our country who are individual thinkers. All I want to say is that it was not an occasion where such messages should have been circulated. They should get their facts right, I am not an accused in the bomb blast case; I am accused in the guns and arms case.

Thanks a ton, Sanju.

Thanks and Jai Hind.
