Not a bad bet at all……….

I remember in 80’s when Hindi film artist went on a strike and we all were left without movies in between the strike a film name ‘Aangaaray’ was released on Video Cassette, unfortunately the movie was not great but still we all watched it and satisfied our hunger of movie watching. Decades later same situation has arrived and in between of the strike comes a fresh release ‘99’ fortunately the film’s result is not the same as the earlier one.

“99” is story based in 1999 where the mobile phones had started expanding in big way. Two small time con man Sachin [Kunal Khemu] and Zaramud [Cyrus Baroacha] earn their living by making duplicate simcards. Their con gets revealed and they on the run damage an expensive car of a big time bookie A.G.M [Mahesh Manjrekar] and in order to repay the damages they start working for AGM. One day a new Client Rahul [Boman Irani] comes to AGM for betting and looses big amount. In order to recover the amount AGM sends Sachin and Zaramud to Delhi. Sachin and Zaramud messes up things in Delhi and ends up in more debt than earlier. But at that time they come to know of a big plan and decide to join hands with Rahul. What happens next is full of thrills and joyful ride.

Story is combination of Facts and Fiction. The Era of late 90’s is handled in excellent manner you will find everything related to that era in this film { Max touch, Nokia Matrix type Phones, Srk-Aamir movies songs, India New Zealand Cricket Match, Y2K and many more]. The combination of this fact and fiction is good and different. Screenplay is crisp and light hearted except in the second half’s earlier stage, where the pace suddenly drops to zero level and you feel like forwarding the film to pacy and thrilling climax which is the best part of the movie. Editing is good again need to edit strictly in second half’s earlier parts just like the climax and the film could have been much better. Camera work is strictly average, much could had been done out here.

Music is not required in such films but still aaye hain baadshah is good and so is the back ground score.

Direction is shared by two different directors, maybe which could be the reasons in the bit slow pace in second half’s initial stage. But whoever has directed the rest parts deserve applaud for the crisp and light hearted treatment. Also full marks to the directors for the theme and concept.

Kunal Khemu has done a decent job, but as a hero of the film is total misfit. We just wished someone else could have been in his place. Soha Ali khan is good support; Cyrus is hilarious and has done his part with total justification. But the show stealers are Boman irani as the Gambler, he excels in each and every scenes. Mahesh Manjrekar as the Bookie is humorous and unpredictable. Amit mistry gives another good role after Ek challis ki Last local. And last but not the least Vinod Khanna in Sp.Appearace is good but needed more of him.

So bol meri ‘Filmi Khopdi’ is film mein kitna hain dum ?

Dum hain acha kaasa dum hain, kahin kahin pe pace kaafi kum hain par climax pe sab kutch superb hain. In between this Strike comes a light hearted crime thriller with zero expectation and the film satisfy you and you quench of movie watching. Do watch it, it’s not a bad bet to watch in these times.
