My Rating

  • Aarakshan could have been better...

Aarakshan rating: 6 out of 10(Shiraj Dakshy wrote on 13 Aug 2011)

After “Rajneeti” Prakash Jha is back with another issue based movie “Arakshan” which deals with the education system in India and how it has become booming business in the last 10 years. It is the story of Prabhakar Anand (Amitabh Bachchan) the principal of a reputed college and his endeavor to fight against corruption in the education system and the nexus of the private coaching institutes. The screenplay written by Prakash Jha & Anjum Rajabali is terrific in the first half wherein the story revolves around the issue of “Arakshan”, but it loses the steam in the second half wherein the story shifts gear from the core topic to a fight of a common man with the system. The main highlight of the movie is the terrific performance from the ensemble star cast. Amitabh Bachchan does a brilliant job as Prabhakar Anand , but the main show stealer performance is of Saif Ali Khan as a Dalit student Deepak Kumar, after “Omkara” this is Saif Ali Khan’s most memorable performance till date. Manoj Bajpai as usual does complete justice to his role of the conniving and shrewd Mithilesh Kumar, I must admit Manoj Bajpai is the most underutilized actor in Bollywood. Deepika Padukone as “Purbi” is good. Prateik tries his best but gets overshadowed by the stalwarts. Even the Support cast consisting of Tanvi Azmi, Yashpal Sharma, Darshan Jariwala and Hema Malini in a guest appearance do complete justice. The sequence between Amitabh and Saif are the highlight of the movie. Music by Shankar Ehsaan Loy again disappoints, somehow the trio have lost their charisma. The screenplay could have been a bit better, but watch this movie for some impactful performances by its ensemble cast. I give 3 stars out of 5.
