Nagesh Kukunoor is one of those directors who made films in which his heart believed in. most of them were simple films with feel good factor in his initial stage. He later matured up with films like Teen Deewarein, Iqbal and Dor. All these films were mark of brilliance. But sadly or maybe the success or fame went up to his head and thus he gave us two of worst films made in recent times – Bombay To Bangkok and 8x12. Maybe those last two films were with big banners or big budget and thus nagesh goofed up or what, but we still hoped to see him back in the forte where he was best. With all these hopes we watched Aashayein {a film which was struggling for its release for long time}, to find out where does it belong to.

“Aashayein” is story of Rahul {John Abraham} a billionaire who is detected with lung cancer. Rahul does not believe in living his life with pain, thus leaves his fiancé Nafisa {Sonal Sehgal} back home and runs to a Shelter Home. The Shelter home is run by a Sister Grace {Pratiksha Lonkar} and takes care of people in their last days of life. Rahul meets his new fellow members Parthasarthi {Girish Karnad}, Madhu {Farida Jalal}, Govind {Master Ashwin Chitale}, Padma {Anaitha Nair} and many more. He starts a new life with all these people and specially Padma who becomes his best friend. One day inspired by Govind’s story and his dream Rahul decides to fulfill all the fellow members’ wishes and then seek for his wish. He and Padma starts the process and what happens next is all the movie about.

Story is different and has lots of sweet and emotional moments. The whole living life king-size attitude is captured in a sugary way and thus makes it interesting view. Screenplay is the best part of this film, as the story is short, but it’s the moments which keeps the film going. There are some superb scenes like John’s direct approach to Doctor, Sister Grace, and Johns Intro with the fellow members especially Farida Jalal and Anaitha Nair. John-Anaitha friendship and all other scenes between them, the whole Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s Anand Watching, The entire Indiana Jones angle, John-Anaitha Date, Wish foundation and the climax scenes. Editing and camera work are good and both works in favor of the film.
Music is nice, soothing and goes very well with the film. Pal Mein, Chala Aaya, Shukriya Zindagi adds to narration of the film. Jeena featuring Shreyas Talpade was nice. Background music is good.

Nagesh Kukunoor keeps our hope in him alive with this film. Though not at the level of Iqbal or Dor, but manages to be near them in terms of good cinema. The subject is very well handled and has loads to offer for its viewers. But it falls short to connect with the audience on emotional level. This movie proves that Nagesh is best when he makes films from his heart and not with mind or with big banners. The film might give you remembrance of some Hollywood films or our own desi films, but besides that it does not have anything else in it. Its total fresh, sweet and feel good film.

Initially in the film John looked to be in hangover of No Smoking, but later slides through his character so well. This movie is one of his best work and he does total justice to the lead role. Anaitha Nair is brilliant and the soul of the film. You love to watch her and want to know more about her character in the film. Girish Karnad give a good support with his stubborn image and proves that when it comes to acting he has lots more to offer. Master Ashwin Chitale is sweet, Farida Jalal, Pratiksha, Sonal and others too delivers a good job.

So bol meri “Filmi Khopdi” is film mein kitna hai dum ?

Dum hai acha khaasa dum hai. The film is a nice watch for people who like such type of films. Also the movie lives up to its name, and has lots of positivity in it. There is an old saying “Asha {Hope} Amar hai”, we too had hopes of Nagesh giving us a good film back and our hopes/wishes were fulfilled with this film. If you are looking for some out and out entertainer like Iqbal or Hyderabad Blues or some masala film, please avoid this film. But if you like feel good films, simple films, and semi emotional films then go for it.
