Abhijeet aka Abhijeet Bhattacharya was born in Kanpur, and was the youngest of the four siblings. He belonged to a middle class Bengali family. He finished his schooling at BNSD Inter College Chunni Ganj, Kanpur. Later, he moved to Bombay to pursue Chartered Accountancy in 1981, but left it mid way to realise that he wanted to become a professional singer. However, he had to struggle for years to make Music-directors and Producers listen to his voice.

In 1984, He received a call from R.D. Burman who wanted him to sing for Dev Anand’s "Anand Hi Anand". Abhijeet also got a chance to sing in the same film as his idol, Kishore Kumar. However, Anand hi Anand flopped and its songs went largely unnoticed. And Abhijeet had to start his struggle all over again to make a place for himself in the film industry.

He made a come-back of sorts when few of his songs from Salman Khan starrer Baaghi (1990) became popular. But he experienced actual success in with “Ole Ole…” from Yeh Dillagi and "Badi Mushkil hai... from Anjaam, both topping the charts of 1994. Especially with the latter, Abhijeet became established as Shah Rukh Khan’s un-official voice and later sung many songs for him.

Later, Abhijeet had an uneven but successful C.V. However, his most successful songs came when he sang for Shah Rukh Khan. For example, Abhijeet’s songs for Yes Boss (1997), not only went on to become hugely popular, but also fetched him his first award ever. Again in 1999, he saw huge success when he sang all the songs for Abbas-Mustan’s Baadshah (1999). His songs for Khoobsurat (1999) were also moderately popular. He saw huge success again when he sang a few songs for SRK’s Chalte Chalte (2003). It's music was huge hit. Around the same time, Abhijeet’s Pop album Tere Bina released and went on to top all the charts. Although, Abhijeet did deliver a few romantic songs time and again, he failed to Live upto the expectations of Music lovers somewhat.

Currently, he has a few films in his kitty. Also, he has been judging reality shows like Voice of India, Saregamapa and Ek Se Badkar Ek.

He won FILMFARE AWARD in 1997 for “Main Koi aisa geet…” from Yes Boss. He has been nominated in 2000 and 2003 for his songs in Dhadkan and Chalte Chalte respectively. He was also awarded the MTV Asia award in 2004.

He is happily married with 2 kids. He often protests openly against the use of Pakistani singers in Hindi film music. He organises the Durga Puja in the Lokhandwala area in Mumbai.
