Alka Gangopadhyay was born in Kolkata on May 26th, 1950. Her father was Kanai Lal Gangpadhyay and mother Nani Bala Gangopadhyay. Alka passed her Higher Secondary Exam from R.B.T school, Sinthui.
She made her film debut in 1971 film “Jiban Jigyasa” directed by Pijush Basu. The role she played in the film was very small but in that short appearance she was able to draw attention. Though she started her career in films, she was basically a stage actress. In the early days she used to act in the renowned theatre group “Bahurupee” where she acted besides Tripti Mitra and Shambhu Mitra. Later she joined Shilpayan, Theatre Unit, and Chaturmukh Theatre Groups. She also acted in commercial theatres.
