Anil Sharma was born and brought up in a Film backdrop environment. His father K.C.Sharma was a executive producer. After finishing his studies, Anil Sharma too joined films. He became assistant director and worked on films like Kahani Kismat Ki (1973), The Burning Train (1980) and Insaaf Ka Tarazu (1981). During the shooting of The Burning Train, Anil Sharma developed a close affinity with Dharmendra. Anil Sharma got his first break when his father decided to turn producer and produce a film for him. The film was Shraddhanjali (1981) starring Rakhee and Suresh Oberoi. It did average business at the box-office. His next two films Tahalka (1982) and Bandhan Kachchey Dhaagon Ka (1983) were disasters however.
