Jyotsna Gupta was born in Kolkata in the year 1914.Her father was Shankar Gupta. Mr. Gupta was a clore associate with the pioneer of Bengali Cinema Hiralal Sen. Mr. Gupta was also the first Bengali film operator and will be remembered in the history of Bengali Film.
Jyotsna had a knack of acting from her childhood. She made her debut in the film “Chakranta”. It was a silent movie. Next she acted in another silent movie “Chashar Meye”.
