Kaberi Basu was born in Kolkata on March 28th, 1938. Her father was Jadabendra Basu. Kaberi passed her Higher Secondary Examination in 1955 from Beltala Girls School.
Pahari Sanyal, the noted actor, was Kaberi’s family friend. Pahari introduced Kaberi to the film director Subodh Mitra. She made her film debut in “Rajkamal” in 1955 directed by Subodh Mitra. After Rajkamal within a year she acted in seven Bengali films. She was married to Ajit Chattopadhay in the year 1956. As her husband was posted in Munger in Bihar, Kaberi left film acting and shifted to Munger.
