Kanan Debi was born in Howrah on 22nd April, 1916. Her father was Ratan Chandra Das and mother was Rajbala Debi. Her father died when she was only 5 yrs old. For that reason she couldn’t continue her studies. Her study ended at the very primary level.
Kanan Devi was talented in singing from her childhood. This talent brought her in the world of cinema. When she was only 10 yrs old she came to Madan Theatre to act in a silent movie “Joydeb” in 1926 and got a payment of Rs. 5/- as remuneration. That was her debut film. Her deut film in talkie was in “Jore Baraat”. It was made in the year 1931 and was directed by her neighbour Jyotish Bandopadhay.
