Kanika Majumdar was born in Memensingha, Bangladesh, in the year 1935. After passing the Higher Secondary Examination she got married in her early years. She was from a Bramho family. Due to her family objection she couldn’t act in Nitin Bose’s film.
She made her film debut in “Teean Kanya” in 1960 directed by Satyajit Ray. She acted in “Monihara” part of the three parts film in the lead role against Kali Bannerjee. But she started her film acting prior to Ray’s film in “Punascha” directed by Mrinal Sen, but the condition was “Punascha” couldn’t be released before Ray’s “Teen Kanya”. Her acting was praised in both the films which enabled her to became one of the major actress in those days in the Bengali films.
