Kavita Krishnamurthy started singing early in her life. She sang her first song, as a child in 1971, a Bengali song along with Lata Mangeshkar. Kavita moved to Mumbai with her aunt. She pursued a degree in Economics at St. Xavier's College, Mumbai and at the same time was on the lookout to furthering her musical career.
Initially Kavita started out by singing advertisement jingles. Later she was introduced her to Laxmikant, of Laxmikant-Pyarelal fame in late 1976. Impressed by Kavitha's singing, Laxmikant gave her work as a dubbing artiste. In the 1980s "Kaahe Ko Byaahi" was the first song that was featured in a film using her own voice. In 1985, she landed her with her first major hit, "Tumse Milkar Na Jaane Kyon".
