Mahendra Kapoor was born on January 9, 1933 in Amritsar. Mahendra Kapoor was a big fan of Mohammad Rafi, and learnt singing trying to imitate his style. He moved to Bombay soon, where he won many singing competitions.
Mahendra Kapoor’s first film as a playback singer was Bajrang Bali (1956). He soon started getting many singing offers, and it was almost visible that he had a great career in hindi films.
Mahendra Kapoor’s first chartbuster was “Chalo ek baar phir se…” for B.R.Chopra’s Gumrah (1963). With this song, he also became a permanent in B. R. Films. His next superhit song was “Mere desh ki dharti…” from Upkar (1967). He was a patent singer for B.R.Chopra and Manoj Kumar and sang for all their films henceforth.
