Majrooh Sultanpuri (real name Asrar ul Hassan Khan) was born on Oct 1, 1919. His father was a Sub-inspector. He studied Arab and Persian in Aligarh, and then went to Lucknow to study Medicine at Takmeel-ut-tib college. At one of the mushairas at Sultanpur, Majrooh got a lot of praise for his ghazal which made Majrooh drop his medical practise and take poetry as a profession.
In 1945, Majrooh Sultanpuri came to Bombay where he met Film producer A.R.Kardar who was very impressed with Majrooh’s poetry. He offered Majrooh to write for his film, and after initial hesitance Majrooh Sultanpuri agreed and was signed for Shah Jehan (1946).
