Mehmood biography

Mehmood was born on September 29, 1932 in Bombay. Her mother Mumtaz Ali was a famous actress-dancer. Mehmood was the 9th child to his parents. After completing his schooling, Mehmood did many odd jobs. Once he was a driver to director P. L. Santoshi, and then was hired to teach Table Tennis to Meena Kumari. It was after his marriage that Mehmood thought of working in films, so that he could earn some big money in quick time.

Mehmood first appeared in a small role in Bimal Roy’s Do Bigha Zameen (1953). His next major role was in C.I.D (1956). He then played a small part in Pyaasa (1957).

Mehmood's father Mumtaz Ali, was a trained Kathak dancer. He was very fond of dance and the arts as he was the Nawab of Arcot's first wife's son.

This expertise in Kathak was handed down in genes and training to Mehmood's sister Minu Mumtaz as well. Minu Mumtaz's dancing skills are evident in songs in Hindi films such 'Saathiye Aaj Mohe' from 'Sahib Biwi Aur Ghulam'.By Paromeeta Mathur Banerjee
