Mumtaz was born on July 31, 1947 to Abdul Sameed Askari and Sardar Begam Habib Agha in Bombay. She was the elder of the two siblings to her parents, Mallika being the younger one.
Mumtaz entered the hindi film industry at a tender age of 12. She did many films as a child artist. When Mumtaz reached her teens, her films with Dara Singh like Tarzan, Boxer, Samson became very popular among the masses. Mumtaz also became famous as the stunt film heroine.
Mumtaz entered the A-league with a grey-shaded role in Mere Sanam (1965). Her performance was appreciated, and soon Mumtaz started getting offers from many big banners. She also did pivotal roles in Kaajal (1965), Khandaan (1965) and a cameo in Pyaar Kiye jaa (1966) which displayed her comic timing.
