Sandhya Rani was born on August 1922 in Kolkata. Her nickname was Angur. All her relatives used to call her as ‘Kalo Angur’. She did not get a chance to get proper education due to financial crisis in her family.
She made her debut film in “Bekar Nasan” directed by Jyotish Bandopadhay as a dancer in 1938. She was well known as a heroine as well as a character artist. She had been acting in Bengali films from 1938 to 1991. In those 53 years of her film career she has acted in more than 200 films including “Banglar Meye”, “Samadhan”, “Sri Radha”, “Kalo Boi”, “Maya Mriga”, “Jaya”, “Daabi”, “Dena Paona”, “Nazar Bandi” etc. She learnt acting from Naresh Mitra.
