The legendary Soumitra Chatterjee is in his 50th year in Cinema. Award winning cinema author and historian Chandi Mukherjee analyses this thinking actor of Bengali cinema Soumitra Chatterjee (or Chattopadhyay) was born on 19th January in the year 1935. He turned 73 this year. His first film Apur Sansar directed by Satyajit Ray was released in the year 1959, which means this is his 50th year in the film industry. During last 50 years he acted in more than 200 films out of which 14 films were directed by Satyajit Ray, 4 films by Mrinal Sen, 5 films by Tapan Sinha and 10 films by Tarun Majumdar.
2008 is the 54th year of Tapan Sinha's film career. But if we consider his joining of film industry in 1946 (as an assistant sound recordist), this year is 62nd year of his association with movies. He made his directorial debut almost in the same time as Satyajit Ray, Ritwick Ghatak and Mrinal Sen did. But he made most number of films than the other three. In his five decades of career he made 40 films. But he never became the first benchers of the Bengali Film Industry. He always remained in the second bench as an average film maker.
A big loss for all the movie lovers. the first movie i watched made by Tapan sinha was Kabuliwala and till this day he remained my fav. Though he was over shadowed by Satyajit Ray's massive reach, he was truly the ordinary man's director....By Sangita Bhattacharya
