Tapan Sinha biography

Tapan Sinha was born on 2nd October 1924 in Kolkata, he was the fifth son of Promila Sinha and Tridibesh Sinha. After completing M.Sc in Physics, Tapan Sinha started his career as a sound recordist in ‘New Theatre Studio’, Later on he joined Pinchood Studio in London. Tapan Sinha’s first directed film was ‘Ankush’ released in 1954, his fourth film ‘Kabuliwala’ brought International fame. Apart from being a director he was a script writer and a musician. He received the Gold Medal from President on India for a number of times. Recently, he was awarded National Award for lifetime contribution to Indian cinema.

Both Ray and Tapan sinha were akin to some aspect. Both used Bismillah Khan. Ravi Shankar and Ali Akhbar as music composers in the initial phasesof their films, but later took over music compositions themselves,Both took the subjects from the contemporary socio-econonic problems. Botth had incontrovertable command over all the departments of film making.But none was a copy-cat of the other. In the late stages of their careers they wrote stories for their films.By Dipen Guha
