Director Anjan Das’s new film “Achin Pakhi” starts and ends with two deaths. Both are women. There two deaths make the film a circular one structurally.
After a long time Bansals are back in the film producing world and it is a healthy sign for good Bengali movies.
In the tranquil area of Bengal live Rai Saheb with his wife Mita and deranged son Tanu. The film begins with Achin nit nesting Tanu leaving the dead body of the maidservant in the courtyard. It was in the middle of night and it was raining heavily. Usually Tanu is kept chained, but that night the obedient servant of the household Achin kept him free as Mita ordered so.
In order to save his son from the police, Rai Saheb converses with his wife to send Achin away to a remote and uninhabited island, to air a hoax that it’s the servant who has killed the maid and has fled far from the reach of the police. It was not yet morning, Rai Saheb (Tapan Ganguly) and his attendant Saukat Ali take Achin on a motorized boat to despatch him in that island. This journey sequence sets the mood and tempo of the film. River plays an important role in this film.
During his stay at the island Achin falls in love with a girl, Pakhi, who often to catch fish nearby on a boat along with her fisherman father Paran Majhi (Brun Chakraborty).
Though Rai Saheb dispatched Achin in an isolated island, he keeps occasional visit to Achin. During one such visit he sees Pakhi (Manali Dey) and decides to marry his son to her as the Pir Baba has said only marriage would recover Tanu from his derangement.
Achin (Subrata Dutt) is Shocked hearing this from in Rai Saheb . Rakhi’s father also agreed in this marriage as Rai Saheb decided to give all the property to Pakhi. Achin and Pakhi decide to flee away from that island one night. But police catches Achin and send him to jail. Pakhi also is married to Tanu.
Though Achin was freed from the guilt of killing, but not before Pakhi commits suicide as she was under impression that Achin was found guilt and would be hanged till death.
Ashim Bose’s cinematography and Iqbal A. Kabir Joel’s music are the two successful pillars of this film. Subrata Dutt and Manali Dey are also very good. This is Manali’s debut film and she is promising, no doubt.
Anjan Das is good, as usual.
