Action Replayy rating: 5 out of 10(Divya Solgama wrote on 05 Nov 2010)

In 90’s When Shekhar Kapur announced that he will be making a film “TIME MACHINE” which will be inspired by Hollywood’s super hit film “BACK TO THE FUTURE”, I was thrilled to watch the desi version of this classic film. The Indian version had Naseerudin Shah, Aamir Khan, Vijay Anand and Raveena Tandon. I wanted to see the bonding scenes between the father-son, mother –son, the climax concert and the whole special effects. Sadly the film was shelved and years later we had a story which had some shades of it {Love Story 2050}. But this year Vipul Shah brings back to us the same old classic films Indian version in total star studded avatar and that too in festival time. Let’s find out will it do justice to the original or the festival time.

“Action Replayy” is story of Bunty {Aditya Roy Kapoor} who is in love with Tanya {Sudeepa Singh} but does not want to marry her. The reason behind this is failed marriage of his parents. Kishen {Akshay Kumar} and Mala {Aishwarya Rai Rai Bachchan} cannot stand each other for a single moment but are stuck in marriage for last 35 years. At this time Bunty decides to stop his parents getting divorced and thus tricks Tanya’s grandfather Prof.Gonzalves {Randhir Kapoor} who has a time machine. Bunty takes a trip to past where his parents were young and starts the process of getting them both in love which will hopefully save their marriage.

Story is as said highly inspired by Hollywood hit flick “Back to the future”. Screenplay is good at times, but quite slow at many places. There are some very good scenes like Bunty – Kishen friendship scenes, Kishen proposing Mala, Bunty – Kishen Bonding Scene, Kishen’s Makeover and some parts of climax. But on negative side the film has a weak start and drags a lot till bunty reaches in past, the whole bonding between Mala and Bunty is missing, plus loads of loose ends like the Randhir Kapoor Chapter and many more. The writers could had done much better with this superb subject, but looks like they were in hurry mode and thus must have written the film in similar manner, sadly it ended up quite slow on silver screen. There are some good one liners related to that era and future which will make you smile. Editing needed to me more tight and crisp as the films treatment at many places is slow and thus your connection with the film keeps getting jerks. Camera work is nice and the some sets of 70’s era are nice.

Music has been a big plus point in Vipul Shah’s films, out here too Zor Ka Jatka, Nakhre and O Bekhabar are nice. But the pre climax dance competition [combo lift from Hum kissi se kum nahin and Back to the future] is weak and disappointing. Tera mera pyar is a nice song, but till the time it comes on screen you want it in fast forward mode.

Vipul Shah is a brilliant director and has given some great films and dramas in past. Sadly his last film was not at all up to the mark and out here too he struggles to come back. The whole convincing factor is missing in the film. His treatment to this film too lacks out somewhere. The script is hurried up, but the direction is not. There are so many scenes where the audience is taken for granted. We wish him to be back in total form and not half form like he is in this film, which is still better than his last one.

Akshay Kumar adds up the charm in this film with his geek and stud looks. The movie gets its life only when Akshay comes on screen. Aishwarya Rai looks nice and does her part properly. Aditya has a parallel role to Akshay and at times was irritation and weak. Someone else would have been best for the film. Ranvijay in negative role was nice. Same for small cameo by Rajpal yadav,Om Puri and Kiron Kher. Radhir kapoor, Neha Dhupiya are wasted.

So bol meri “Filmi Khopdi” is film mein kitna hai dum?

Dum hai, to certain extent, but uske baad kaafi slow hai. The movie has its moments thanks to Akshay, Aish, and Music, Some good one liners, etc but gets overshadowed by its slow pace which looks like someone is watching the movie in slow motion, underdeveloped scenes and somewhere something is missing. Still not a bad watch as the movie in whole is quite above average.
