Anila, wife of Sudhindra Bose, receives a letter from her maternal uncle Manomohan Mitra, who had left home 35 years ago and was coming back for the first time. He learns from Shital Sarkar, a friend of the family that Anila was his sole surviving relation. It was his wish to spend the day in Calcutta as her guest. Sudhindra reacts strongly to the letter but Anila persuades him to let the old man come. Manmohan arrives. He is almost immediately accepted as a grandfather by Anila's only son - Satyaki. Around this time Anila suddenly remember her grandfather's will. Sudhindra immediately concludes that her uncle has come with the sole purpose of claiming his share. Sudhindra's enquriy reveals that there is indeed a provision in the will for Manomohan and the money is now with the executor of the will. Sudhindra realises that a showdown with Manomohan is imminent and he takes the aid of his barrister friend Sengupta. Sengupta insults the old man for extorting from his friend. Next morning Anila and Sudhindra discover that Manmohan has left. Suspecting that he has left to collect his share, Sudhindra, Anila and Satyaki set off in their car for Shantiniketan. When they come back to Calcutta Manmohan gives an envelope to Sudhindra, a small parting gift to the family for his extremely civilized and generous hospitality. The gift turns out to be a cheque made by Shital Sarkar which transfers Manmohan's entire property to Anila Basu.
