Agneepath rating: 4 out of 10(Divya Solgama wrote on 26 Jan 2012)

First things first I don’t like to watch remakes, as most of them just try to cash in on the past glory. I believe if a less know film with great concept gets remade is proper definition of remake. Thus out here in case of Agneepath [2012], I decided to watch it as the makers claimed it not to be frame to frame copy of the Original Classic film Agneepath made almost two decades ago. And yes the makers are mostly correct in their claim. The latest film tries to show the film from a different perspective, a perspective of a young Vijay Dinanath Chauhan. This concept has been used plenty of times in Hollywood films and we did see slight glimpse of it in Ram Gopal Verma’s films too. Out there most of the time they succeeded in attempting and contributing something new to their cinema. So let’s find out whether this new version of Agneepath will also contribute something new to our cinema or might just end up generating huge bucks like most of the earlier Remakes did on cashing over the past glory of the classic film.

“Agneepath {2012}” is story of Vijay Chauhan {Hrithik Roshan} whose father was killed brutally in his native village mandva by an evil man Kancha {Sanjay Dutt}. Young Vijay along with his mother comes to Mumbai, where he learns about the power of Underworld king Rauf Lala {Rishi Kapoor}. Vijay decides to destroy Kancha but with help of Rauf Lala, thus joins his gang. Years pass by and Vijay becomes right hand of Rauf Lala. On the other side Kancha’s entry in Mumbai is restricted due to Rauf Lala and Honest Cop Gaitunde {Om Puri}. How does Vijay reach Kancha and quenches his thirst for revenge is what the entire film about.

Story’s basic plot is similar to the original classic, but out here the makers changed it to young Vijay in comparison to the middle aged Vijay in the original. The original Agneepath had some fantastic writing, dialogs and screenplay, sadly out there the writing part is pretty weak. The movie starts with a bang {thanks to Sanjay Dutt’s deadlier avatar as Kancha}, but as it starts moving ahead the screenplay just drags on and at times bores you. Second half has some powerful scenes {most of them have similar situations as in the original} but again falls flat towards the weak and pathetic climax. Some of the interesting scenes of the film are Kancha Killing Master Dinanath Chauhan, Kancha – Rauf first meet, Vijay meeting Kancha in mandva, Vijay-Rauf fight followed by Vijay talking about his father over dinner table. On the flip side the Child delivery scene of Zarina Wahab and few more scenes were over the top. Not to forget the weak first half followed even weaker climax towards the end. Camera work is fine, especially in the start of the film. Editing could have been better in order to make the film crisper.

Music by Ajay Atul is pretty average. Gun Gun is a nice song, but does not go with the mood of the film. Shah Ka Rutba and Deva are ok. Abhi Mujh Mein explores the emotional notes. O saiyyan is wasted. Chikni Chameli is the highlight song of the film. Background music is not at all impressive.

Karan Malhotra the director of this film decided to show the film from different perspective and we appreciate that, but he forgot to work hard to make this film offer something new. The original Agneepath was a director Mukul S Anand’s film. Mukul S Anand attempted something different as per that time, his hard work reflected in the film followed by his writers. Even out here the original screenplay keeps moving with you on back of your mind. But the latest one is just flat and has nothing new to offer. The whole characterization of Vijay Dinanath Chauhan was missing. It would had been really interesting that how Vijay became the Super Don of Mumbai, but all we saw out here was seen stuffs from Ram Gopal Verma’s films or must say Aditya Pancholi / Sanjay Dutt’s films from 90’s era. Karan you have to either insane or a highly creative genius like Mukul S Anand to make this film. Sadly you don’t belong to any of this category. You proved out there that you are nothing but just a Wannabe.

Hrithik Roshan is a fine actor but fails to rise over the Mammoth performance by Amitabh Bachchan in the original. I would blame the writers out here as they portrayed such a weak Vijay Chauhan and failed to establish the agony, pain in this character. Sanjay Dutt succeeds in his part as Kancha and adds his own charm and magic to the character. His looks and evil mannerisms makes the movie interesting, wished there was more of him. Rishi Kapoor is superb in his role and again is one of the reasons for watching this weak film. Priyanka Chopra is highly wasted. Zarina Wahab, Om Puri, Sachin Khedekar, Brijendra Kale, Deven Bojai, Rajesh Vivek and many others are plain average. Chetan Pandit is good as Mater. Katrina Kaif in Chikni Chameli is crowd puller.

So bol meri ‘Filmi Khopdi’ is film mein kitna hai Dum ?

Dum??? Except for Fine performance by Sanjay Dutt, Rishi Kapoor and Crowd puller song ‘Chikni Chameli’ there is no Dum in this weak version of ‘Agneepath’. Karan Johar said his father was very upset after the failure of Agneepath in the 90’s. I would say Karan you father will be more upset seeing this version of Agneepath. Yash Johar’s cinema instincts proved wrong at that time due to bad luck, but time as proved that his vision was never wrong. Instead of making proud, Karan has ended up insulting his father’s vision. Not to forget the huge insult of director Mukul S Anand and the legendary character ‘Vijay Dinanath Chauhan’ played by National Award Winner for this film - Amitabh Bachchan. If you loved the original Agneepath and love the character ‘Vijay Dinanath Chauhan’ than don’t spoil it by watching this weak film, if you have not seen the original then please do watch it for great vision of the director, flawless performances, fantastic screenplay, superb background music and many more reasons. As for me I am watching the Original Agneepath again as my solace and the respect towards true cinema.

    Ratings : 2/5

P.S – The movie might cash in huge moolas due to credit of the Original Agneepath and Chikni Chameli.
