    Ahindra Chowdury is a legendary figure of Bengali theatre and cinema.

    Ahindra Chowdhury was born on 6th August, 1896. He did his initial schooling from Chakraberia Sishu Vidyalaya and later joined London Missionary, Kolkata and continued his studies till 1911.

    In 1921, he collaborated with his friend Prafulla Ghosh and established “Photo Play Syndicate.” He directed a motionless picture “ Soul of a slave” over there. In 1923, he wrote the screenplay for this movie and acted in the lead role. His first motion picture was “Hrishir Prem “ directed by Jyotish Bandopadhay in 1931. In 1929, he worked as a radio artist. He had produced and directed some Hindi films. In 1924, he was the first person to bring out a record on theatre. He was the one who introduced the system of monthly payment in cinema. On 11th September, 1957 he acted in Shahjahan at Minerva Theatre. He announced his retirement right after this memorable performance before the audiences. Krishnakanther will (1932), Kanthahar(1935), Talkie of Talkies (1937) are some of his great films.

    In 1958, he received the much coveted Sangeet Natak Acedemy award. In 1963, he was awarded Padmashri. Rabindra Bharati University conferred on him the title of D.Litt. He also was selected as Girish Lecturer by University of Calcutta. The legend passed away on 3rd November, 1974.
