Ajab Gazabb Love rating: 5 out of 10(Divya Solgama wrote on 26 Oct 2012)

There are times when we crave for quality cinema and then there are times when we want to feast ourselves with out-and-out Masala Films. Now in between there are some films where you just want to go with your friends or family and have some good time-pass fun. The expectations are low from the film and so are the cinematic merits of it, but the film delivers us some frothy fun with some funny moments & foot-tapping music, not to forget our tub of popcorn. One such film - ‘Ajab Gazabb Love’ releases this week, starring Jackky Bhagnani whose last film ‘F.A.L.T.U’ was a sleeper hit with rocking chartbuster song ‘Char Baj Gaye’. So let’s find out whether ‘Ajab Gazabb Love’ too might be timepass flick or might turn out a crappy affair like Jackky’s debut ‘Kal Kissne Dekha’, Which incidentally kissi ne bhi nahin dekha.

‘Ajab Gazabb Love’ is the story of a Multimillionaire Car designer Rajvir {Jackky Bhagnani} and his loving family {Darshan Jariwal, Kirron kher & others}. Rajvir falls in love with Madhuri {Nidhi Subbaiah}, who hates rich people and loves the poor people. Thus Rajvir pretends to belong to a poor family, followed by his attempts to make his whole family poor in order to win Madhuri’s heart. What happens next is what the entire film is about.

Story is a remake of some South Indian Romantic Comedy while the theme is quite similar to films like Patthar Ke Sanam, An Evening In Paris etc, where the rich becomes poor to win his love. But it’s the treatment out here which makes it interesting and enjoyable. The makers could’ve made it with high dosage of melodrama and over dramatic scenes, but decided to keep it light and peppy. There are some enjoyable moments like Jackky’s meet with Nidhi followed by the whole Petrol Pump scene, Jackky making his family poor, Kiron Kher’s dramatic welcome, The whole family meeting Arshad Warsi, Darshan Jariwal selling Bananas and few more.
On the flip side, Arjun Rampal’s half baked characters, Repetitive scenes, The dramatic portions towards the finale along with the Romantic track in the second half hamper the narrative at places. Also, once the premise is set and established, the movie does not go above that level – perhaps the makers should’ve added more comical scenes and funny moments, keeping the movie completely light right till the end. The climax too is bit hurried but has the flavor of the film, which goes missing just before the finale. Camera work is good; all the songs are shot with a lot of energy. Editing is fine and has done what was required.

Music by Sajid Wajid is good and peppy, but lacks the ‘F.A.L.T.U’ kind of chartbusters. Still, ‘Boom Boom’ is entertaining. while‘ Sun Soniye’, ‘Tu Mera’ are not at par. ‘Nach de Punjabi’ is good for end credits. Background music is pretty average.

Director Sanjay Gadhvi is known for his phenomenally successful ‘Dhoom’ franchise but his last attempt ‘Kidnap’ was a disaster. Out here, he tries his luck in Romantic Comedy, and though he has still a long long way to go to match the ‘Dhoom’ magic, but doesn’t ruin the film either. As a director, there are no particular contributions from his side, except few car scenes in the start and an unintentionally comparison between Uday Chopra and Jackky Bhagnani. He should’ve added more fun and humor to this plotline and made it more enjoyable.

Jackky Bhagnani does a decent job, but at places fails too. Nidhi Subbaiah looks cute, but is handicapped by her half-baked character-sketch., as there are no explanations given for her prejudice about the rich and poor. {Spoiler Alert} Arjun Rampal in a double role is a surprise and again I feel the makers should’ve utilized these characters in a big way rather than using them for mere star-attraction. The movie belongs to Darshan Jariwal and Kirron Kher who are superb throughout. It’s because of their rib-tickling performances that one stays more-or-less entertained throughout the film without any so-called dull moment. Arshad Warsi in a small role is hilarious, wished there were more moments. Rest all were just about okay.

So bol meri ‘Filmi Khopdi’ iss film mein kitna hain Dum ?

Dum hain in the comical scenes and crackling performance by the character actors. But still, one can’t avoid a feeling that the makers could’ve done wonders with this plot line and supporting actors. On an overall basis, the movie will be a timepass entertainer, especially among the youth who will enjoy it with their friends. One can say that this Ajab Gazabb Love is more of a Popcorn Wala Love. Eatable, Forgettable and yet Enjoyable while it lasts.
