Ajab teri Kudrat Gazab tera khel…

In Early 90’s a Young director made his launch in Hindi Cinema with Dharmendra’s Banner made film Ghayal. Thanks to his direction, fantastic performances and dialogs the film and the maker both were instant hit. The success continued with more such gripping and hard hitting films like Damini, Ghatak, Lajja, Pukar, The Legend of Bhagar Singh, etc. In Between he also made his one and only comedy Andaz Apna Apna, which dint get the due success at box office but is one of the biggest hit on home video and has joined the cult classic status. The directors last few films started to jitter and thus people wanted him to do another comedy and now he has returned back with a Romantic Comedy “Ajab Prem Ki Gazab Kahani”, let’s find out what lies beneath this Rom-Com.

Ajab Prem Ki Gazab Kahani is story of Prem {Ranbir Kapoor}, a happy go lucky small town guy who runs a Happy Club along with his friends who love to help others and keep them happy. He meets a new girl in the town Jenny {Katrina Kaif} and falls in love with her. Jenny after some confusion starts liking Prem and accepts him as her Friend. Prem tries to change himself to match as per Jenny’s liking only to find out that she loves someone else and expects Prem to help them. Prem agrees and thus starts the journey to Jenny’s marriage with lots of bumps in between.

Story is simple and nothing new, we have seen many such stories in past. But the treatment out here is bit different starting form comedy and later forced comedy. The story is totally predictable and does not have any special twist or turns. Screenplay is silly and hilarious in the first half, the slapstick comedy works in the first half, but later starts to dilute and finally starts looking forced like when Prem and his gang tries to elope Jenny in goa, Jenny’s being rescued by prem when she is kidnapped, etc . Still there are many good moments in the first half like Prem-Jenny Veg-Non Veg fiasco, Prem going with Jenny at the dance party, Prem going to work, Prem and his father’s scenes, etc. The film loses its grip in the second half as far as the story and screenplay is concern. Camera work is quite different and lifts the mood of the film.

Music by Pritam is nice and songs like Prem ki Naiyaan, Main Tera and Tera Hone are enjoyable. The best picturized song is Kaise Bataye with great camera work.

The film hardly has any Raj Kumar Santoshi touch and looks like more of a new directors work. The humor of Andaz Apna Apna is missing in this Rom Com. His direction is highly influenced by 90’s Comedy which had more of slapstick comedy. Still he has treated the first half interestingly and entertainingly, sadly could not continue it till the end. There are many loopholes and cinematic liberties in the film, which we start noticing when the film starts dragging in the second half.

Ranbir Kapoor is the major reason for watching and enjoying this film. His timing, His expressions, His simplicity rocks. Katrina looks stunning in few scenes and has done her job perfectly. Darshan Jhariwala is funny and enjoyable. Upen Patel, Govind Namdeo, Zakir Hussain and others are strictly ok.

So bol meri “Filmi Khopdi” is film mein kitna hain dum ?

Dum hain first half mein acha dum hain along with Ranbirs performance, screen presence along with Kartina’s Galm mixed with Pritams music. But thanks to the script and dragging second half the movie loses its charm and turns out to be average product. Also when the movie ends with the end credit titles with Raj Kumar Santoshi name one does wonder Ajab teri Kudrat Gazab tera khel, Raj Kumar Santoshi struggles for fame. Sorry Raj we understood why you were not making a comedy after Andaz Apna Apna and hence forth we won’t request to make more. As far as this movie is concern, watch it for first half and Lead pair only.
