Ajay Devgan (real name Vishal Devgan) was born on April 2nd, 1969 in Delhi. His father Veeru Devgan was a famous action director by the time Ajay grew up. Ajay finished his schooling at Silver Beach High School and graduated from Mithibai College. Then he started assisting his father until his father decided to launch Ajay as a hero.
Ajay Devgan made his debut in 1991 with Phool Aur Kaante (1991), directed by Kuku Kohli which introduced Madhoo. Phool Aur Kaante was a super hit and Ajay Devgan got typecast as an action hero.
He signed several action films at a time, of which several were hits. Some of his notable successes at Box-office are Jigar (1992), Divya Shakti (1993), Dhanwaan (1994), Dilwale (1994), Vijaypath (1994) and Suhaag (1994).
By 1995, Ajay Devgan was an established action hero. His performance in Mahesh Bhatt’s Naajayaz (1995) got acclaimed, which proved he can carry off serious roles also. For next two years, Jaan (1996) was his only film which managed to recover its costs. He also did Indra Kumar’s Ishq (1997), which showed his latent comic timing. Ishq was a huge hit, and Ajay devgan was back. Ishq also kicked off a romance between him and Kajol. Year 1998 brought a major turn in Ajay devgan’s career. Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha was A Blockbuster, while he got a lot of acclaim for his mature performance in Zakhm (1998). He went on to win a National award for this performance. In 1999, Ajay Devgan’s 6 films were released, out of which he got critical acclaim for his performances in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and Thakshak. On April 24, 1999, Ajay Devgan married Kajol.
After a non-successful 2000 and 2001, Ajay Devgan’s career got a much needed boost in 2002. He did Company (2002), The Legend Of Bhagat Singh (2002) and Deewangee (2002) where he got accolades from everywhere. 2002 established him as an intense actor, who was no longer just an action hero. Ajay Devgan carried the success of 2002 in 2003, where Qayamat, Bhoot and Gangaajal were hits. In Qayamat, Ajay was back to his action film days, and his fans couldn’t be happier. His other liked roles were in Khakee (2004) (where he essayed a cold blooded criminal), Yuva (2004), and Raincoat (2004). 2005 saw his lull period, where 6 out of 8 films were disasters at Box-office. However, he silenced his critics with a gritty performance in Apaharan (2005). He was also appreciated in Main Aisa Hi Hoon (2005), Shikhar (2005) and Kaal (2005). In July 2006, both his films Omkara and Golmaal released and proved his versitality.
2007 however proved to be his worst year. His both films Ram Gopal Varma ki Aag and Cash fell flat on box-office. In 2008, Halla Bol (2008) had a poor opening but Ajay’s performance was appreciated. His other release, Sunday also had average business. His directorial debut, U Me and Hum, his debut film as a director, where he starred with Kajol was an average fair. The audience found the film a bit serious but they appreciated Ajay's choice of subject and his capacity as a director. Ajay Devgan won the Filmfare Best debut award for Phool Aur Kaante. Later, he won Filmfare awards for best actor critics’ for The Legend of Bhagat Singh in 2002. He also won the award for Best actor in a villainous role for Deewangee (2002) the same year. Ajay Devgan has also won National awards for Zakhm (1998) and The Legend of Bhagat Singh (2002).
He is a car enthusiast. Ajay and Kajol have a daughter Nysa, who was born in May 2003. He is also a film distributor and his company Devgan Enterprises has released several films in the Mumbai territory. However, their home productions like Raju Chacha, Dil Kya Kare and Hindustan Ki Kasam havent been successful. Ajay is a claustrophobic, and fears getting stuck in a small room. He is also the brand ambassador for Whirlpool, alongwith his wife Kajol. In 2008, Ajay, Kajol and Kajol’s mother Tanuja judged a Reality Show on Zee TV.
