Two years back a big movie producer – Kumar Mangat {know for his association with Ajay Devgan} came up with a small budget film – ‘Pyaar Ka Punchnama’. The movie was a surprise hit of that year and was immensely popular among the youth and people young at heart. The makers did good amount of publicity especially targeting the youth audience and the end result was successful. Last year the makers came up with another small budget film ‘Bit too Boss’ and they promoted this film as ‘From the makers of Pyaar Ka Punchnama’. This one line was enough for people wanting to see good fun loving youth based film to cinema hall. Sadly ‘Bit too Boss’ disappointed its audience and all those who went to see it expecting another fun loving film promoted by the makers. This year the makers are back with another small budget film –‘Akaash Vani’ starring one of the couple from ‘Par Ka Punchnama’ along with its original director. Again the makers have added the tag line in its promotion -‘From the makers of Pyaar Ka Punchnama’. So let’s find out whether this movie will be another case of wrong publicity for a wrong film or might be genuinely fun loving and entertaining as promised by them.

‘Aakash Vani’ is story about two youngsters Aakash { Kartikeya Tiwari} & Vani { Nushrat Bharucha} who love each other in their college days. But as life progresses Vani decides to break off their relationship and agrees to get married to the person selected by her father {Kiran kumar}. Vani’s married life turns out to be a hell for her. Years later she meets Aakash again along with her friends. What happens next is what the entire film is all about.

Story has been used in several family drama type films right from 60’s to early 90’s. Such movies were made decades ago where the heroine sacrifices for her parents and the hero comes to her rescue. One might find lot of similarities with Yash Chopra’s ‘Faasle’ which was super dud. There are some good scenes like the ragging scene, Aakash & Vani dreaming about their honeymoon, the whole break-off part followed by the marriage tiffs between Vani & her husband Ravi, The whole mountain trip followed by Vani’s revolt towards the finale.
On the flip side, the romantic part is so fast and abrupt that you don’t connect to their romantic chemistry at all. Also dramatic moments seems like you are watching a T.V Soap opera which keeps dragging on and on. The whole sher-o-shayari, Dialogbaazi, etc are total outdated and seems out of place in this so called youth romantic film. The whole arrange marriage funda seems total out of sync in today’s time. The length of this film is also another negative part as it tests your patience as the movie keeps progressing.
Camera work is fine but editing is horrible. The initial parts {whose funny scenes are shown in promos} are so abrupt and fast. Whereas the dramatic parts are so over stretched that one might feel the editor might have dozed off while watching them.
Music by Hitesh Sonik is surprisingly good. There has been hardly any music promotion and despite of that he manages to impress you with few superb scores like ‘Crazy Lover’, ‘Tera Mera Naam’, ‘Pad Gaye Ji’ & ‘Bas Main Aur Tu’. It’s very rare that in today’s time one tends to like songs in its first hearing. Wish the makers had promoted this music score. Lyrics in songs like ‘Tera Mera Naam’, ‘Pad Gaye Ji’ & ‘ Bas Main Aur Tu’ have huge gulzar inspiration.

Director Luv Ranjan made his mark with ‘Par Ka Punchnama’ and one does expect t to see his next venture. But out here it’s a shock to see that the director takes such a old topic and narrates it’s a childish and lethargic manner. All the dramatic scenes looked out of place. If only he would have worked hard on his direction {which should have been total hard hitting} and editing the movie would have managed to make its impact.

All those who watched ‘Par Ka Punchnama’ will not forget Kartikeya Tiwari’s long one take dialog scene. He was simply superb in that scene. He does his part but, seemed weak in comparison to Nushrat Bharucha. She was superb and did her part with total grace. Kiran Kumar was good in his role. Sunny Singh Nijjar was brilliant in his negative role. Sana Shaikh, Gautam Mehra, Mahesh Thakur & others were good support.

So bol meri ‘Filmi Khopdi’ iss film mein kitna hai Dum ?

Dum hain in terms of concept, decent performance and story line along with fresh music. But thanks to wrong publicity, bad direction, horrible editing and tacky dialogs the movie loses its charm and seems total outdated in today’s times. It has some very good moments along with refreshing music which is fantastic, but on overall basis it’s too stretched and dramatic that one fails miserably in patience test. Wished there was a celestial-announcement {Aakashvani} about this film, just like in mythological times which would have warned about the wrong promotions along with negative points so that one can watch the movie on its individual merits.
