Akshay Kumar (real name Rajiv Bhatia) was born on September 9, 1967. He belonged to a middle class Punjabi family. His father was a government worker. When Akshay was 7 years, his family moved to Bombay. Akshay completed his schooling at Don Bosco School, and graduated from Khalsa College. At college, He showed a keen interest in Sports especially Kung-fu, Judo and Karate. After College, Akshay went to Bangkok to do something on his own. He worked as a chef, and also learnt Martial arts. When he came back to Mumbai, he started teaching Martial arts and earned Rs. 4000 a month. By chance, Akshay got an offer for modelling and realised the money that was being made by posing for a few hours. He began modelling on a serious level.
After a few months of modelling, Akshay Kumar got a film offer from Pramod Chakravarthy. The film was Deedar (1991) and Akshay Kumar made his debut in Bollywood. with Deedar and Saugandh (1991). Both bombed at the box-office, Akshay Kumar was noticed for his Greek God looks and got many offers. He shot to fame with Abbas-Mustan’s Khiladi (1992), a thriller. Akshay’s action scenes in the climax were hugely appreciated, and Akshay Kumar became the first choice for action films. 1994 was a major year for Akshay. His Main Khiladi Tu Anari, Yeh Dillagi, Suhaag and Mohra were all hits of the year. With the success of Khiladi and Main Khiladi Tu Anadi, Khiladi became his middle name. Later, he even did a range of films with a tag Khiladi in the film title, like Sabse Bada Khiladi (1995), Khiladiyon Ki Khiladi (1996), Mr. and Mrs. Khiladi (1997), International Khiladi (1999), Khiladi 420 (2001) etc. most of which were successes. Rest of his films from 1995 to 1998 flopped however.
1999 proved to be a crucial year for Akshay Kumar. He was critically acclaimed in Tanuja Chandra’s Sangharsh (1999), and Jaanwar proved to be a sleeper hit at the box-office. There was no looking back for Akshay then.
In 2000, Hera Pheri and Dhadkan showed his flair at comedy and romance respectively. Both films were huge hits. In 2001, Ek Rishta and Ajnabee again hit the bull’s eye at the Box-office. He got a lot of appreciation for his negative role in Ajnabee. Again, his performances in Aankhen (2002) and Awara Paagal Deewana (2002) met with a lot of acclaim. Andaz (2003) was again a huge hit, which also launched two beauty queens Lara Dutta and Priyanka Chopra.
Khakee (2004) and Mujhse shaadi karogi (2004) were two of his most loved performances. Aitraaz (2004) was also a success at Box-office. Akshay carried his success in 2005, where two of his films were Waqt and Garam Masala did very well. Akshay was no longer an action star. He had proved his range to everyone.In 2006, his performances in Jaan-e-mann and Bhagam Bhag were appreciated. Akshay’s best year has been 2007, where he had 4 back-to-back hits, Namastey London, Heyy Babyy, Bhool Bhulaiyya and Welcome. In 2008 Tashan flopped badly but Akshay remained high on buzz with his upcoming Singh is Kinng, Nagesh Kukunoor’s Eight by Ten, Nikhil Advani’s Chandni Chowk to China and Sajid Nadiadwala's Kambakht Ishq. He also hosted Fear Factor Khatron Ke Khiladi on the television channel Colors. In 2001, He won the Filmfare award for Best villain for Ajnabee, while Garam Masala fetched him a Filmfare award for Best comedian in 2005.
He married Twinkle Khanna in December 2000, and has a son Araav who was born in sept 2002. Akshay Kumar has also endorsed products in the past like Pespi, Bagpiper and is cuurently the brand ambassador for Thums Up. He led the team in Heat 2006 world tour, where he was accompanied by Saif Ali Khan, Sushmita Sen and Preity Zinta. He is famous for performing his dare devil stunts all by himself.
